maximum amount of nitrous?

Anyone know the maximum amount of nitrous that can be used on a stock block 240, 260, 280 befoe bad things start to happen. I plan to remove the carbs and intake and install the four barrel intake with a 500 cfm holly, and use a plate injection system under the carburator. This is for the dragstrip and street use.

The bottom end is strong enough to take a fairly good sized shot, that is, if the fuel and ignition system is set up for it.

I'd stay 100hp or less unless you plan on doing some fairly serious fuel system and ignition system upgrades. Detonation or lack of fuel will quickly kill any engine with nitrous. Even a 50 or 75hp shot would make a pretty good kick in the pants in a Z.

Yes, as 2manyzs said "The bottom end is strong enough to take a fairly good sized shot, that is, if the fuel and ignition system is set up for it. "

It can take it. But you will hurt it real fast without setting up the motor for nos. You could make a few runs hitting the nos and see good #s. But you will be pulling the motor out real soon for new piston rings (If your lucky). I have used nos on a few cars now and will tell you now. If your motor is not upgraded for nos dont do it. Most of the stock motors( that I have seen ) with nos will blow out the rings or burn holes in one or more pistons.

A motor set up for nos will have the whole motor redone for the bottle. The biggest thing is your compression. If you want to run the bottle on you stock motor drop the compression as much as you can and you could make your motor last alittle longer. But you will find yourself with a bad motor sooner or later.

I know this is not what you where looking to hear. Sorry just what I have found and looking to save you some money in the long run.

I know a guy that grabbed a 1982 280zx block and head and put it in a Datsun truck. He ran that Holley carb and a 75hp shot of NOS. He did a MSD igntion setup and it looked like he had it all hooked up good.

He ran the thing at the strip many times and used it as a driver for a couple years. Its still in ok shape as far as he knows...

I suppose a turbo block might work better. I don' t know if the pistons are stronger, but they sure do have better rings in them.

Thanks for all the information. I would want at least a 200 hp shot of nitrous to make the power that I would want. From what you all have said, that power level would not be good for the engine. I have another Z that I have a 350 ZZ3 engine in, that has over 400 hp. but it is set up for top end. Instead of installing another 350, I was hoping that with nitrous, I could get over 300 hp. on the other 240Z that I have. Oh well. I have a 300zx turbo that is bone stock, and has good power for the street, but is not suited for the strip. I have a 427 Ford engine and a 428 Super CobraJet engine, but they will not fit without using a torch. I just thought that it would be fun to run the stock L series engine with nitrous at the drag strip.

Thanks again....
