Chassis numbers

HS30-01342, is definately a 1971 build, most probably mid to late September, to get any closer than that you would have to use the engine number, and some of the other fittings to cross reference. The glove box hand book would seal the issue if it has been dealer tagged, and in existance.

Slightly OT - Nissan Australia used to only sell GT-R parts to the original owners of the Aussie-delivered cars (200 of them). Holden get very funny about selling parts that belong on older HDT vehicles without proof of ownership & verifying if the car is genuine. Fraud is a problem, there are lots of fake Falcon GT's & Brock Commodores around.

Could be a UK car then as they started coming here Sept 71.

Guus, what's the story with HS30 1342? is it a car that you are looking at to buy?

If its RHD in Europe then it pretty likely to have come from the UK. If the only bit that has no rust is the tyres than it DEFINITELY comes from the UK

On the subject of chassis numbers, did the factory number the vehicles individually for different variations of the one model or do the chassis numbers start from zero and go on from there, regardless of the the prefix.

What I am trying to say is my car is GRS30-000692. Does this mean it is the 692nd 260Z built, or is it the 692nd right hand drive 2+2, where does it all end?

Rusty1,

can you please tell me some production information for your Z eg colour, interior colour, manual, auto, aircon , engine type and engine number number. so I can put it in the register for GRS30- you can send it by private message if you want.

your Zed is early 74 build and the engine number should be about L26- 46995.

cheers

You might want to make sure that the number is being described correctly.

Possibly HS30-101342 or HS30-013420? I would not rule it out....

Would not be the first time that this has happened, as I've seen it many times. My 1970 S30 was mis-described on import to the UK and was listed as an "HS30" on the official UK ownership document ( V5 ). The DVLA ( Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority ) are famously useless when you throw something out of the ordinary at them.

If in doubt, check the actual Factory stamping on the firewall and trust it more than any of the non-Factory supplied paperwork.

You can approximately date the car by cross-referencing many other factors ( Factory parts dating / Factory-supplied documents etc ) as has already been mentioned.

Alan's point is that the chassis numbers are 6 digits long. They have leading zero's where required, so you're description of HS30-1342 isn't a complete number. Now you may have omitted the leading digits deliberately, but can you confirm?

Sean, congratulations to your new car. Is it a Nov. '72 version ?Here the authorities hammer the VIN additionally and in a quite big size into the firewall.

Rolf

As well as the the factory pressed numbering? So you have 2 sets of VIN's on the firewall? or is this for cars that dont already have the VIN pressed into the firewall.

I have a 260z with a factory pressed VIN number on the firewall, a different VIN on the factory nissan ID tag, and yet another different VIN on the Australian compliance plate.:stupid:

Something fishy going on there maybe. I guess that means there are 2 other 260z's out there that are dead.

Speaking of dead cars, I cut up an early 240z today. Cut the roof right off it. Going to fill the hole in my 240z roof where the sunroof was.

See the pic in my gallery of the butchered Z. The PO though he was improving the car by welding bits of metal onto the sides of it. I think he was mentally unstable.

Couldn't agree more...

I am just about to do the same with one of my '78 280Z parts cars; the roof will be taken to the body shop so that the other '78 280Z (my avatar) can return back to stock without the aftermarket sunroof. I have also removed the i.d. tags from the car so that when it goes to the junkyard it doesn't find its way back onto the road.
