1973 240K Coupe

Do you guys in queensland have a classic car rego system like SA?

You need to be a member of a car club ($20 a year), and as long as its an original car, some minor alterations allowed (also depends on the intelligence of the club member inspecting the vehicle) you can register the car for 90 dollars a year, and it can be used for up to 90 days a year, recorded by you in a log book before you go out each time. There are no limitations about where you go, however in order to boost event numbers our club now requires 2 or 3 runs per year to keep you rego, these include trips to historic races at mallala, free entry, and parking right by the track, local shows, or just blasts through the countryside. (not really a chore at all, but great fun)

Alfa, you may be able to keep both cars, failing that, give me the spare one

I've been meaning to tell the gang that I was lucky enough to score a Nissan workshop manual for L20A and L24 engines for Christmas (just need a car to go with it now!). It details the 2 and 2.4 litre variants as available in Australia. So... although I haven't sat down in the armchair for an indepth read yet, I'm sure I could quote you the spec differnces between the L24 twin carb and L24 single...

The manual is a nice one (thanks Dad!) in very good condition and contains the odd addendum by a mechanic in biro... eg Cam sprocket torque 40ft-lb (factory)..."60ft-lb better" (mystery mechanic!).

I'll have a look tonight for you...

Halz, thanks for that I'd appreciate it. I'm guessing I might be able to get a bit of kick out of her if I put a couple of new carbs on and a full exhaust system with extractors. I'm just not too keen on this as it will make the car not original. Although, they're not worth much anyway... don't think they're going to ever be worth much to be honest.

Alfadog, is yours actually badged as a "240K GL"? I'm still not sure what you have got ( you said is had a "KGC110" VIN prefix - but I thought that made it a GT? ).

So far I've found two-door models with minor-change variations by the following names:

*HT1800 GL

*HT1600 GL

*HT1600 Dx

*HT2000 GT-X

*HT2000 GT

*HT2000 GT-X - E.S

and of course the HT2000 GT-R.

All of the above are the Japanese domestic model names. There are even more ( more confusing! ) models of the four-doors and a couple of wagons too. Chuck in a few special models for the government / armed forces and it makes a really diverse range. So what the hell have you got? It must have had a special name / variation for the Australian market. Looks like Japan did not have a HT2000 GL like you got. Also looks like they made minor changes to trim and brightwork every six months. Yikes.

I just had a sniff around in a few books and now I remember what's different between the GT-R and the GT-X ( which I think is the Japanese model equivalent to what they called the "240K" for the few export markets they sent them to? ).

Its the rear three quarter. The wheelarch on the GT-R is much higher and more rounded ( obviously to help them in homologating them for racing - which never happened ). Once the Overfender is put on top, it makes it look quite different anyway - so it maybe disguises the fact that the wheelarch extends right up into that swage line and cuts it in half. The GT-X still has the swage line complete.................

So, Alfadog - if you want to make a GT-R replica you are going to have to break out the tinsnips! ( please don't! ).

Looks like Ben has a much better idea about all this than me, and I would agree that yours is very likely to have a relatively poor performance in comparison to your Z. That's just the nature of the beast.

nixcars, I looked up the dimensions for the GT-R ( yes it WAS technically a four-seater ) and you are right; there really is not that much difference:

Overall length: 4460mm ( the same )

Overall width: 1695mm ( includes Overfenders )

Height: 1380mm ( a bit lower )

Wheelbase: 2610mm ( the same )

So it must be that radiused rear wheelarch that makes the car look so different. Interesting.

I think that this line that rises and "cuts" the rear wheel arch is a Skyline trademark. It can be spotted in earlier models and in the later too.. And as Alan said gtr's are the only ones that have rounder rear arches.

I think that we have only 240kgt model. Which looks pretty much same but has 2,4 litre engine with dual SU's not single carb!!? I have seen even the c210 model 240kgt's for sale here. One was -79 and had inhection engine.

Hey guys,

Just to clarify the prefix codes used in Australia,

the 240K GL sedan is a HGC 110,

& the 240K GL coupe (hardtop) is a KHGC 110.

Mine will be converted to a GTR because I have a good

set of tinsnips & also the 4 wheel arch flares.

Hey Alan,

Do you have engine details on the HT2000 GT-X - E.S.? My understanding is that it should be running the L20AET.

(The first model to use the first mass produced Japanese turbo engine.)

OK Alfa... My book may or may not offer the info you seek. The title is: SERVICE MANUAL model L20A, L24 SERIES ENGINE and it was produced by Nissan motor co., LTD in Tokyo. I cannot find a date of publishing but pencilled in the front cover is "1969-1974 240Z manual - original" - an adition by the bookshop? or a workshop note?

It is full of tables, pictures and directions on all aspects of checking, tuning and overhauling L20A and L24 engines. Two L24 engines are noted: the L24 - SU carb (the twin carb, 240Z unit) and the L24 - single carb. The latter engine is described as being fitted to the following models:

G(L)130-(U) Datsun 2400 (sedan, super six)

G(L)130-Q(U) Datsun 2400 (sedan, personal deluxe six)

Now, these may not be your 240K, but there is a chance that the engine spec for the L24 (single carb) is the same, so I quote again:

L24 (single carb):

comp ratio 8.55:1, Power 130HP/5600rpm, Torque 144.9 ft-lb/3600rpm, Intake valve diameter 38mm, (exhaust same as twin carb model), Carburettor DAF342-6 two barrel carb (doesn't mention make of carb).

L24 (twin SU-type carb):

comp ratio 9:1, Power 151 HP/5600rpm, Torque 145.7 ft-lb/4400rpm, Intake valve diameter 42mm, Carburettor 2xHJG46W or HJL46W (I assume H is for Hitachi).

There are also a lot of other detail differences (fancy knowing the exhaust valve spring coil diameter?!). I'll stop here in case I'm barking up the wrong tree model wise...

That looks right!

On my brochure I bought it says:

8.6:1 compression ratio (close enough)

130BHP @ 5600 rpm (same)

torque 20.0 kg m @ 3600 rpm which translates into

torque 145ft lbs @ 3600 rpm

So there we go - I htink you've got hte right engine!

If you could type out the rest of the information about the engine, or better yet, scan in any relevant info, that'd be great :D
