May 5, 201212 yr comment_389159 I would. For short distances, there'd be no need, but 300 miles is a lot of turning.... Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/43131-towing-a-1971-240z-with-a-car-dolly/#findComment-389159 Share on other sites
May 5, 201212 yr comment_389165 Removing the drive-shaft is an problem because fluid will leak out of the back of the transmission -- especially if you elevate the front of the car on a dolly. Not sure if anyone else here has done it but there may be some tricks around keeping the fluid inside the transmission. I used to to put a plastic bag over the end and used a ziptie to seal it off. But, this might not work for such a long drive. Is there a way you can tow her on a full trailer? May 7, 201212 yr comment_389316 Or you can just tow with the rear wheels up... Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/43131-towing-a-1971-240z-with-a-car-dolly/#findComment-389316 Share on other sites
May 8, 201212 yr comment_389390 As stated by LeonV back the car on the dolly lock the steering wheel and go. Towed mine 200 miles no problems. I did it this way because of spoiler on the front end would not clear the dolly to load. May 8, 201212 yr comment_389406 I don't think you can lock the steering wheel with the column lock (it would be turned slightly to the right and would wear out the front tires). If I recall, you need to tie the steering wheel so you get slight movement in the wheels, but no radical turns that could put her in a telephone pole. Therefore the key would have to be out of the lock position when you towed her from the rear. Sound right? May 8, 201212 yr comment_389407 And wouldn't a low front spoiler with all that engine weight maybe get scratched up by bouncing on these fine interstates we have. Tie the steering wheel firmly. And wouldn't a low front spoiler with all that engine weight maybe get scratched up by bouncing on these fine interstates we have.I didn't see a mention of a spoiler in OP's post. And no, I don't think it would be an issue unless the car was lowered and the dolly raised it up to an extreme angle. If it is an issue, take the air dam off. May 8, 201212 yr comment_389412 That would be correct no movement in the front wheels, for the spoiler it had everthing to do with the angle and distance from the bottom of the spoiler and the tires in loading forward, the angle backed on changes so it worked fine for me. Also towing should be done with caution anyway you do it, if you us some common sence when you drive and be aware of the road conditions all things should be o.k.
