Posted May 12, 201212 yr comment_389800 Okay, I spent all of 20 minutes installing this tonight. And at first I was worried that the depth would be an issue. Or rather the flatness of the wheel. However, that turned out not to be such a big deal, as the adapter to fit onto the Datsun column was about as deep as the wheel was, and the overall difference is about a half inch closer to the driver. What I was not prepared for was the small diameter. I thought 1 inch would not be noticeable, but my gosh it is. Perhaps it is the combination of the thickness and the diameter reduction, but I have to let it gel for a few weeks before I decide if I am going to leave it. I like it, and it feels great, but somehow a small part of me thinks it looks out of place...opinions? I am setting up the car for a 1000 mile rally right now in November and I thought this would make the ride more enjoyable... Keep in mind I just refinished my OEM wheel, and I think it looks brilliant. May 12, 201212 yr comment_389824 You are asking for opinions, the white stitching on that thick small diameter steering wheel screams,,,CAMARO/MUSTANG/MOPAR....not Z imo Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/43194-momo-prototipo-installed/#findComment-389824 Share on other sites
May 12, 201212 yr comment_389825 Took me a bit to get used to my Momo, but it feels fantastic now. Hopping back into a Z with a stock wheel now feels strange and somewhat ungainly. May 12, 201212 yr Author comment_389843 Thanks for the humor and comments. I will need to go for a real drive before I make my final decision. AFter all, we get these cars to drive them. But unfortunately, it is pouring rain here, and today was the 2nd big car show to get rained out. I swear somebody has it out for me. How can it be dry for weeks, and then rain on the ONE day I want to go to a car show! May 12, 201212 yr comment_389844 My new Z had a smaller diameter Momo, similar to yours in size. I didn't like it. Oh, it felt better to the hand, I suppose, but the driving factor turned me off. With smaller diameter steering wheels, a mere nudge in one direction or the other tends to make the car a bit "darty." The larger wheel, given a nudge merely changes direction minutely. Or maybe it's just because I'm gettin' old.... May 12, 201212 yr Author comment_389867 Frank, I just went for a 30 miles drive and I guess I am old as well, but I really felt like I was holding the wheel to my XBOX 360 steering wheel. It is just too small. The steering effort is significantly increased and I felt like I was holding onto a toy wheel. It looks wonderful and is amazingly strong and well made. But it is not for me. So long story short.ANYBODY WANT TO BUY A MOMO PROTOTIPO WITH 30 MILES ON IT? PERFECT CONDITION. I paid 300 dollars for the adapter and the wheel with shipping, but I will take 200 for both plus shipping. PM me with offer.I really love the look and the feel of my faux wood wheel. I like how it looks better. I am an old soul I suppose, but I like my wood wheel. May 13, 201212 yr comment_389941 I like the looks of that wheel ! - the thicker and cushioned grip will provide a better grip, while letting your hands relax a bit more on longer trips. The smaller dia will give you a little more room to change the position of at least your left leg on long driving segments as well. But if you don't like it - you don't like it.I do have the stock wheel in the 72 that I use for longer road trips... but after hours of driving my hands do start to get cramped, and the blood circulation is reduced... I've been thinking about sending a stock wheel out - having it cut down 1/2" in dia - then padded and leather wrapped. You are younger than me - - but for a 1000 mile rally - - - I'd have to install a seat with better leg, lumbar and back support. Which is what I did, when I installed the seats out of a late 90's Accura Integra. Huge difference in long distance driving comfort.FWIW,Carl B.
