Motorsport Flush Mounted Mirror Kit

I'm leaning towards installing Motorsport flush mounted mirrors on my 240z. They're a bit modern-looking, but quality and good visibility is more important to me than aesthetics in this case.

I was hoping I could get some feedback from owners of these mirrors.

There are lots of reviews on here about those mirrors. In general, the quality is so-so and the tend to vibrate. I thought about them a few years ago, but I decided against them after the reported issues with them.

I must not have used the right search criteria. Anyhow, I had the impression they were pretty good mirrors. Here is an excerpt from an email I received back in 2000 regarding Motorsport Flush Mounted Mirrors:

I have a set of Motorsport flush mirrors on my wife's 240Z. She wanted them because she hates when people walk by and knocks the aftermarket mirrors out of adjustment. Granted these mirrors are expensive, but the kit Motorsport made up to mount them on a early Z is very good. Motorsport told me that these are factory Sentra mirrors. The only thing to note is the right side mirror is NOT convex so you don't get an expanded view of the traffic, if that's what you are used to. My friend copied the mounting plate and installed a set of Toyota Celica mirrors with the "big hole" in them. They look cool, but they are kind of big compared to regular Z mirrors or the Motorsport ones for that matter.

They really sounded great. Motorsport may have changed the design since then.

I had those mirrors on 721. They looked pretty good, I think. The driver mirror had a severe vibration issue I was never able to solve. Another problem was that I couldn't get the mirrors adjusted to my preference without physically shimming both the mounting holes in the plate and the mirror-to-base. This shimming gave the mirrors a "detached" appearance and wasn't as aesthetically pleasing as I wanted.

That's unfortunate. I'm also considering LH and RH stock mirrors. Would maintain the classic look, but visibility is limited for the flat (non-convex) RH mirror. Any vibration or other issues with them?

Has anyone installed Motorsport's California Style mirrors? I haven't been able to find a photo of a z with them installed.

ironhelix......The Cali Style mirrors suck big time :sick:, they are fine on an Italian car, my Z imported from California had them, they are hard to keep adjusted and vibrate a lot . Now she wears the vintage bullet type side mirrors that were very popular back in the day. FWIW

Iron helix, if you are unable to find a stock passenger's side mirror that is convex, you can get a mirror from a more modern car (Integra or similar), cut it to size and silicone it to the flat one. I bought a glass cutting bit for the dremmel on eBay for this purpose. Took a bit of doing, but nothing more complicated than the average fabrication we do on these cars.

I believe that is for the driver's side. If you are to flip this around for the passenger's side you'll need a shim to compensate for the camber of the mirror stem. Otherwise the mirror will be sitting off at a strange angle.

I do agree that the OEM mirrors are much nicer than some of the bulky looking after market ones. They preserve the proportions of the car better.
