Worn Camshaft

I have discovered that my camshaft (at least 2 lobes) is fairly worn. It will be a few weeks before I get a chance to have this replaced so I was wondering if it is dangerous to drive it like this. I understand that the surface of the cam is hardened steel but as you get below this it becomes softer and more prone to wear. What is the chance of a catastrophic type event (i.e. large piece of metal coming loose and doing some major damage)?

Thanks for the input.

What's "fairly worn"? I have seen them wear down and create a ridge on either side of the rocker, but if the lobe is no longer smooth to the touch, something is drastically wrong. I can't tell what year Z you have from your avatar, but if you have a spray bar, I'd guess it's clogged. Metal shavings are never good in an engine, so I wouldn't drive it if the lobes are severely worn or if they are scored. Those shavings can and will destroy the rest of the motor. If they are simply worn, but smooth, you can chance it until you make repairs IF YOU HAVE TO.

Thanks for the reply. I have a 74 260z but the motor has been rebuilt with an e31 head with spray bar. The 2 questionable cam lobes are smooth but concave. Based on what I have read and what you say I will let the car sit until I can get it repaired. I was dying to get it out after having a bunch of other work done but I guess better safe than sorry.
