Thought I would start a thread in lieu of finally getting my 71 running this weekend!!!!

The car had been in a 5 year hiatus before I bought it, and due to other projects has sat for another 2 years while in my possession.

But on this memorial day weekend I was determined to get as much done as possible with the single goal of getting it going.

The car came with a l28 head l24 combo:sick:, which also happened to be missing a valve guide. The engine was swapped out for an l24 block early e88 head courtesy of CL.

I installed the engine a while back, had the SU's rebuilt, and toyed with ideas of elec ignition.

Yesterday, with everything hooked up, stock points distributor installed it started right up and rev'd great! Never mind the clould of smoke!

Today we installed the E12-80 distributor and did some further syncing of the the carbs. Idles really well,

Really happy with the progress! As any running Z gets the nod in my book :D:D

Future plans ? Just to get it on the road again. Brakes and clutch need to be gone through, Have ordered both slave and master clutch cylinders, as were both shot.

Theres some pics

LOL, no driving yet but she is pretty much complete. Bled brakes and clutch, a little wiring and cleaning up done today. First time off the jackstands in a year or so. Back end is a little high but can be done later on. Waiting on radiator fans in the mail. Wiring still being worked out, but the hard labor is done. First phase done! :classic:Lots of work to do with paint and interior but it feels good to be back together.

Runs! Sounds great, shop did a good job with wiring. More work ahead, some nagging issues to take care of:

- A wheel alignment, yikes!

- More tuning needed

-BMC is leaking, so will have to change out and bleed,

- Need a longer clutch slave push rod

But very happy to have an exhaust and a running Z after all the work put in getting it to this point. :D:D:D

Congrats. Its looking good in the photo and the ride height is sitting nicely. Now its time to enjoy:D

You dont see it from the outside, but you have done a hell of a lot of work on it. I bet it feels like a completly different car now.

Is the slave cylinder different on the T5? Never had a T5, so not sure if its the same.

Are you using the 15/16" BMC out of the early 280ZX? Kits are easy to get, but a complete one is not so easy these days.

Enjoy

Thanks Chas, yes tons of work and time in to it. Working on a video. Will be putting in a n/a 5spd next week with any luck .

So why are you taking out the T-5? Admittley the Nissan has better ratios but you will hate the shifter after you have been using the Mustang shifter.

Your project looks good and you are running MS2?

Hi Madkaw,

Yes, I am running MS2.

The shop I tookthe car to get wired and tuned say the T5 is heavy (which it is), and a pain to rebuild. Rear main seal is also leaking ): See how we go next week when I have some time off.
