Early 240z seat belt clasp mounting screw

Hi All

I am not sure what the samll factory screw/bolt looks like that mounts the seat belt holder to the seat on the early S30 seats. The screw in question is used to hold a small plastic 'J' shaped hook to the window side of the seat back rest near your shoulder. This hook is used when you are not using the seat belt, it holds the seat belt clasp in easy reach when you are about to use the seat belt instead of fumbling around on the floor looking for the clasp of the seat belt. A picture would be great.

I hope I have explaioned this well enough and not confused everyone reading this thread.

I am not sure if this was only for the Australian market or other markets like the US.

Any help would be appreciated.

Sorry, I have only three crappy pictures of the early type. There is another type, a longer hook which mounts on the door post but I have sometimes seen it mounted on the seat. These pictures show the very small seat hook which would be the earliest. The screw is typical of other interior locations - it is chrome with a domed phillips head cap and the head is tapered to fit in the tapered opening on the hook. It is a sheet metal screw and attaches to the seat back frame (which should have a hole for it). Sorry I can't be more descriptive.

Here are several pictures of the very early seat belt vinyl covered metal hooks and attaching screws that Chris referred too. These are from an 11/69 production HLS30, and were only used on cars produced in the first few months, so I think your car would have the later plastic version. I attached one picture of the later style. I believe the screws are the same.

Hi Mike and Chris,

Thanks guys that is exactly what I was looking for. Mike you are spot on, my hooks are the plastic type. Just one other question, does the spring washer go on the seat side or the screw head side of the plastic hook? I am thinking the seat side and looking at the pictures above seem to suggest this.

I have one but unfortunately the other one was broken by a previous owner. So if anyone has one that they are willing to part with let me know. I may even have a part you are looking for.

That type of washer prevents the screw from backing out. It would go between the screw head and the seat belt hook. I wasn't aware of the washer but it makes sense. Thanks for the pics, Mike.

Chris is right, the washer goes between the hook and the screw. The small plastic hook I posted a picture of in post #3 above was also only used in relatively early 1970 production cars. After that they switched to a larger plastic hook. There are a couple listed on ebay in the US right now. Here is a photo from one of the listings. You can see they are quite a bit longer. Which one do you need Greg, the earlier small plastic hook or the later longer one? I may have a set of the early hooks, but probably not any extra screws. Let me know if that is what you need.

Another interesting thing about the hooks is the JDM cars had the hooks mounted quite a bit higher on the seat, near the headrest. I think they are the only market with them mounted in that location and I not sure what the reason for that was. I'll see if I can find a picture showing a JDM hook.

Hi Mike, great photos.

The Australian seats had them up high, on the headrest just like Kats JDM car, and they were the smaller hook as well. From what I can gather from the engine number and the other dates on various parts of my car, the approximate build date was Dec 1970 which seems like it goes against the US seat where they changed to the larger hook earlier in 1970. I have been looking on ebay US for a set but I only ever see the longer hooks. If you are willing to sell/swap for something you need I would definately be interested in one or two if you have any spare. Do not worry about the screws and washers as I have spares of them, I just need to re-chrome them.

Mike, I may have to take issue with your statement relative to small hooks being used in early 1970 production cars. My car is a 1/71 production car, one of the very last series 1 cars, and came with the seat mounted small hooks. Also, the marks on my hooks suggest that the washers actually mounted between the seat vinyl and the hook.

As my seats have been recovered, that last observation is substantiated only by these marks from the washers on my j-hooks. I've always thought that this was the location

of the washer to keep to hook from rotating when removing or hanging up the shoulder harness.

Hi Dan,

Yes, you are correct about the location of the washer. It goes between the seat and the hook, not between the screw and the hook. I realized that after I checked a couple of my cars and forgot to go back and update my comments here. Your rational of keeping the hook from rotating makes sense to me. If your 1/71 car has the small hooks then it sounds like all of the series 1 cars would have had them. I am not sure what I was basing that one, but I must have been wrong. I have a 10/70 JDM s30 and it also has the small plastic hooks, although they are mounted higher up, near the headrests. I am not sure why the JDM/Australian market cars had the hooks mounted higher up, so if anyone knows I would be interested in finding out.

By the way, I found a spare small plastic hook, so if Classsicdatto is still around send me a PM and I will mail it to you.
