My new 1972 240Z ITS race car

Recommended Posts

I picked this up last Friday night. It's won many races and 3 MARRS Championships. I need to install some NASCAR door bars but otherwise it's ready to race. I was hoping to race my 280Z all year but Marty needed to sell his 240Z now and I couldn't pass it up.

Looks great Chuck! One question... Is the main hoop diagonal legal? I thought they had to land at the bottom of the cage. It looks like yours lands at the deck or strut tower. I can't quite see where in the pics.

It does land at the bottom of the cage. The main hoop is attached to the front of the inner wheel house. The car and cage were built back in 1993.

My concern today has been making the door bars SCCA ITS legal. From what I understand I need two bars connecting the front and main loop. It can be in an X or NASCAR bars. Nascar bars are defined as "consist of one or more sidebars that intrude into the door cavity and connect the main hoop to the front hoop". So...I plan to replace my upper door bars with bars that intrude into the door cavity and leave the lower diagonal pars in place. I'll connect the door bars together with a couple pieces of tubing per side.

Gotcha. I have never seen a Z cage main hoop not go down to the rockers. Here is my NASCAR bar. The car wasn't finished yet, so ignore the rest of the nasty interior.

My friend races a 240Z and his is also an older build and doesn't go all the way down either. My door bars will be similar to yours except mine join at the back. I like the location of your dash bar. Should be plenty of room for you knees! Any interference with your gauges?

No bike rack on this car. My blue and silver Zs have racks. The Road Runner doesn't need a rack. The trunk's plenty big! I'd like to get a hitch for my Lotus so I can haul a biek or two.

No mud flaps? What if they're Datsun mud flaps???

Plenty of knee room, but we don't run a dash, so gauges weren't a problem. We mounted the stock gauges in a sheet metal pod. It's crapcan racing, so it was done on the cheap by a teammate who is a HVAC tinner by trade. We need to make a new cluster out of plastic.

Our rules state that the door bars must be at least 6" apart, thus the spacing at the rear of the bars.
