Crank sprocket stay on dimple?

Recommended Posts

I put my timing stuff on and was very careful. I turned the crank over and now the crank sprocket dimple is 2 links to the left of my bright link. Is this normal? Kinda' seems like it since the crank sprocket has less teeth than the cam sprocket. Motor turned like rubbing panties together.

It's been quite a while (40+ years) since I did this, but I think I recall the procedure as 1) get the #1 piston to TDC; 2) place the bright link on the crank dimple; 3) rotate the cam/sprocket to allow the second bright link (42 links from the crank dimple) to fit on the cam sprocket at its dimple; 4) insert the cam sprocket on the camshaft by rotating the cam. You'll need to have released the tensioner pressure prior to doing this and to have no valve springs in place.

Did I forget anything materially?

Yes, this is normal. Just make sure that you put it together correct initially.

And if you keep on turning the crank for--- whatever number of turns it takes, you will get the dimple and the bright link to align once again. And keep your mind on the job at hand.;)
