interior chrome detailing

Can anyone tell me where or how to repair the silver pinstriping that is on the interior of the doors. I have a small section that has come off and need to replace it. Anyone with experience fixing this stuff?

Are you talking about the thin pinstriping tape you can buy in just about any car shop or the chromed rubber strip that goes on the panel behind the seats????????????????????

If it's the chromed rubber strip, you'll find miles of the stuff in any wrecking yard. Just check out the bumper bars and door protectors on modern Datsuns and Toyts.

I meant to mention that the rubber strips are not actually chrome.

The rubber is covered with, (believe it or not ), FOIL. It then has a covering of clear plastic, giving it a Chrome--like appearance.

XYZ: here's a copy of a post to the 240z.org mail list that I saved a year or so ago. I haven't tried this yet, but will in the future unless I find some great replacement panels at a cheap price.

OK, since y'all are my dearest friends in the whole wide world and have taught

me so much about my Z, here is my door panel chrome strip restoration tip. I

have never seen this one posted anywhere so apologies to anyone who thinks

it's THEIR tip:

Get a roll of the shiniest aluminum tape you can find. I've seen it at hardware

stores and I got mine from the company that makes tubular skylights (SolarTube).

Cut a strip along the edge that is about 8 to 10 mm wide and a little longer

than

the formerly chrome strip. Use a straight edge and razor and do a neat job.

Don't kink the tape. Clean the area where you are going to apply the tape.

Start at one end and peel about 10 inces of the backing from the tape, stretch

it a bit and stick it to the top of the ridge. Run your finger along it to

smooth it

and stick it down. Do this along the whole length of the door panel ridge. Then

smooth it down the sides of the ridge, again working from one end to the other.

Try not to get any wrinkles. If you mess it up, peel it off and try with a new

piece

of tape. When it is all stuck down, trim the ends with a razor. DONE!

I did that on another Z car.Its hvac duct tape.It doesn't quite have the shiny but its better than nothing or half on and off.

Bambikiller's got the idea. Thanks for the post. The trim I speak of is on the driver's and passenger's door panels, two pinstripes that look like chrome but are obviously tape. Someone at a dentless repair shop told me about so tape you can by at a hobby store for this but I can't remember what it's called. Maybe I should get off my lazy butt and go down to this store and find out what he was talking about. Sound like the duct tape idea is a good one as well. The blue color under the chrome tape just isn't cutting it for me anymore. Especially since it's only about a 6-8" length. Thanks guys.

True, the original is chromed plastic tape. I tried to apply chromed Mylar tape, but it would not conform to the radius of the bead. So, I used aluminum tape, Just as described by Damian in Carl's post.

But, I would add to Damian's Tech Tip - After applying, use a paste polish (I used Simichrome) on the tape and bring it up to a HIGH polish. You'll never miss the chrome again.

OH! This also works for the heater panel chrome trim.

I may have found a supplier for some chrome tape to use on these door trim beads. There is a web site http://www.greatplanes.com/accys/gpmm1080.html that carries the stuff in 1/4" widths. Scroll down to the kwik tape section. They have all different colors. I think this stuff is 4 bucks for 36' so you can share with all your friends.

I have some on order and should pick it up in a week or two. I bought some 'duct' tape but it has too much of a brushed steel look to it, $3.50 I think. I have not tried the solar tube stuff and am going to wait until this other tape comes in. I'll keep you posted on if/how it works.
