Bad noise comming from valve cover.

So I am going to remove the front cover. :ogre:

So is my next step to put the engine at TDC? .

You can put the engine at TDC Grant, but if you don't it's not a big deal, and easy enough to time later. You are going to fit a new chain and guides while your in there, and it's not too difficult to retime the dizzy and pump. Have fun.

Thanks, I am just trying not to run into any little snags along the way. I think on the plus side I have a new head gasket. Will I nead to drop the oil pan?

FSM time I think.

Will I need a new oil pump gasket? does the Dizzy require a gasket?

Yes to the oil pump gasket. And no, I have never seen a gasket under the dizzy.

And treat the long water pump bolts gently. They are probably corroded in.

Edit. Actually you don't have to take all the water pump bolts out to take off the front cover. (from memory)

There are some common bolts at the front of the pan to the front cover but you shouldn't have to remove the oil pan if you careful with the gasket. Maybe break loose with a putty knife before you pull the cover to keep from tearing it. All #12 bolts have to come out and a few #10s, don't forget the 2 up top at the head. The Fixx have a song I sing when working on mine, "One thing leads to another". There's a trick putting the oil pump at 11:25, slide it up then turn it 1/8" clockwise and you'll feel the gears fall in place then turn back counter clockwise the 1/8th and bolt up.
