Anybody trim bell house for msa header?

My 6 to 1 header is hitting ever so slightly on the bell housing. I want to grind away a 1/8th" or less. Is this common or is something wrong?

You don't cut on the bell housing to make way for a header..........EVER!

So I should dent this work of art 6 to 1 flower pot I've got? With what? I don't want to break the thermo-coating. I'll put up a picture later.

I have th exact same issue with my MSA 6 into 1 header and was considering grinding down 1/8th of inch off the little ear on the transmission so it does not hit the header. I have a 5spd from a 280zx in my car. The idea of hitting and denting the brand new ceramic coated header does sit well with me. What would be hurt by grinding down enough material from the ear of the transmission?

I have an 82 ZX tranny in my '73. I had the exact same issue and I ground the tranny boss down so it would clear. That boss isn't used for anything anyway. Make sure you remove enough to allow for movement in the header.

As promised, here are the pics of my trimmed bell housing. As you can see no strength is lost by grinding the ear down. My trans is a 5spd out of a '82 280zx.

Hey all , I will be facing this situation soon as i will be buying this header next week . My 71 is all matching #s with a E31 head and a 5 speed upgrade from a unknown year . The PO did the swap . Will all the 5 speeds be the same with the clearance issue ? I will be adding a custom SS 2.5 inch pipe straight to My new birthday gift from my son"s , a magnaflo SS muffler , model 11226 universal .

Please offer opinions without bashing please .

I don't think you'll know until you get things in place. As long as you're aware of this issue you won't be surprised. It just means you will need to pull the header out one or two more times to make sure everything clears. I used my angle grinder and a file and did exactly as shown in the pics.

Same here, ground it with die grinder. No problems. Your going to love the sound made by that setup.

I used a 4.5" die grinder and a file as well. Take off a little material at a time as the grinder will cut in to the aluminum if you dig in to it. A note about safety, make sure you wear gloves and safety glasses that completely seal against your face. The aluminum comes off in very tiny pieces and creates an aluminum dust as you can see in my pics. Most safety glasses do not seal against your face. A few pieces got past my safety glasses and I instantly knew it. If your safetly glasses dont seal well then a pair of swimming goggles might be a good idea.
