July 25, 201212 yr comment_396765 Use oil if for no other reason than to prevent the insert from being rusted to the tube. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/43909-struts/#findComment-396765 Share on other sites

July 25, 201212 yr comment_396780 CarlCan't resist a good hunt.http://www.kyb.com/service/installationtips/installationtip08.php"When installing a KYB strut cartridge do not put any water, oil or any other liquids inside of the strut housing. Any existing fluid should be removed from the housing before installing the new cartridge. KYB cartridges are designed and engineered to operate without any additional liquids."Dang, I was planning on smuggling scotch inside my strut tubes... So much for that plan.... July 25, 201212 yr Author comment_396781 Thanks zKars for answering for me. Anyway I have installed one kyb unit without any fluid added to the strut tube. Planning to do the rest the same. Thanks to all who replied. JB Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/43909-struts/#findComment-396781 Share on other sites
July 25, 201212 yr comment_396785 I'd put oil in there anyway. What's it gonna hurt? I have a nice front strut assembly sitting in my garage. It's currently unusable because there's a strut insert stuck inside the non-oiled tube. Grrr...Chuck Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/43909-struts/#findComment-396785 Share on other sites
July 25, 201212 yr comment_396797 The original rationale for a bit of oil in the tube was to aid heat transfer so that the insert would run cooler. Based on that, if KYB says they don't need the oil, so be it. No oil should be fine. But other than the mess to deal with next time, I don't see the harm in adding oil either.
