Am replacing struts with kyb units. The kyb web site says do not add fluid to the strut tube. Other tips say add oil. Advice please. JB

Can you give me the direct URL - that shows KYB saying not to add oil to the strut tube? I can't seem to find it on their sight?

thanks,

Carl B.

Can't resist a good hunt.

http://www.kyb.com/service/installationtips/installationtip08.php

"When installing a KYB strut cartridge do not put any water, oil or any other liquids inside of the strut housing. Any existing fluid should be removed from the housing before installing the new cartridge. KYB cartridges are designed and engineered to operate without any additional liquids."

Dang, I was planning on smuggling scotch inside my strut tubes... So much for that plan....

Thanks zKars for answering for me. Anyway I have installed one kyb unit without any fluid added to the strut tube. Planning to do the rest the same. Thanks to all who replied. JB

I'd put oil in there anyway. What's it gonna hurt? I have a nice front strut assembly sitting in my garage. It's currently unusable because there's a strut insert stuck inside the non-oiled tube. Grrr...

The original rationale for a bit of oil in the tube was to aid heat transfer so that the insert would run cooler. Based on that, if KYB says they don't need the oil, so be it. No oil should be fine. But other than the mess to deal with next time, I don't see the harm in adding oil either.
