hi, im thinking about installing a 77 280z fuel injected motor into a 73 240z. i have both cars complete, all wiring injectors ect..im wondering what all i need to do, i have the precessor and wiring from the 77 280z, but not sure what i need to do about the fuel lines, tanks, fuel pump, and ignition. will they interchange? if you know of a site or have done this swap id love to hear from you.

Hi,

I was considering this myself and did some research. The harness for the fuel injection will work, as long as you use all of the relays, etc. You need to open the requisite hole in the firewall to bring the ECU into the passenger compartment and install the Fuel Injection/pump relay under the drivers side dash area. The pump bracket will fit. I know you need the 280Z tank for the fittings. Breather line, pump supply line and line from pump to injectors and need a second fuel line for the return to the tank.

I liked the idea because you get the light body with the smooth fuel injected engine.

Didn't procced because ther was too much rust in the early 260 I was going to use.

I am planning on doing this swap also. I have a 76 L28 in a rusted up body, and a 240 with a good body. The 240 has a good engine in it, but I thought that the L28 would be a neat swap.

Has anyone actually done this swap? If so I would sure appreciate any insight into the problems that I might run into.

Is the result worth the work? I would imagine that the L28 would make the 240 move, but if anyone who has a 240 with the L28 would jump in and let me know if its worth the work I would sure appreciate it.

homemade stand alone fuel injection computer

I know two people that are useing this. They bolth bought it and had a computer guy put it togather for them. They say its easy and never fails. Plus you get to say you have a fuel managment system you can program with your computer. Also did it yourself for under $200. :cheeky:

Thanks for the link. That sure looks like it would be a pretty cool winter project. I have never liked the idea of not really understanding what was controlling my fuel system. I really think that being able to know exactly what was telling my fuel system what to do would be great and being able to modify it would be even better.

I think I have a pretty good handle on what is going to required for the L28 into the 240 on the fuel side. What is going to have to be swapped on the ignition side?

My thoughts are

1. the dizzy will have to come over with the L28

2. the alternator will come over too (don't know if its reqd, but its new)

3. the coil should come over (I think)

I think that should be it. From what I understand the crank pickup is located in the dizzy, the fuel system needs to tie into the coil, and I should be taken care of.

Can anyone think of what else is going to be req'd to swap over?

this is all good info ! I'm looking at putting the injection system from a 280Z into ... a 280Z!

its a radical concept, but I think it could work!

(actually a retro-conversion from carbs - I'm a bit luckier than the others, the fuel return lines, etc, are all there)

The MegaSquirt FI system is going to be my next winter project.

I'm thinking that it would work well on a twin throttle body injection setup off the standard inlet manifold.

This would actually convince me to get rid of my flat tops.

Can anyone confirm that the only parts of the ignition system that needs to come over from the 280 to the 240 is the dizzy, coil, and alternator?

G'day all, I'm reviving this thread as last night I pulled the motor and box out of the 280zx to install into the 240.

I want to gather info on what traps to look out for and ask a few Qu's. Once I've finished I'll post up the entire project.

First thing I noticed is how much easier it is to move the 240 shell around the yard than the 280zx shell, which is motivating me even further as this 280zx really flys on the dirt.

-Fuel lines

I'll use the 280 elec fuel pump, but the return line on the 240 is smaller, can I use an adapter to connect it to the fi return rail? does size matter other wise will I have to change tanks too ( the 280zx tank will not fit)

-Wire loom

I disconnected the loom from the body and pulled it complete with the motor.

When I took the loom harness off the ECU I had to disconnect a single spade connector and a three spade connector from the loom, should follow these under the dash and remove them? what do they control?

I'm going to fit up the motor and box this weekend but I don't know if you really need to change the small diameter return line?

I have put '78 head and F.I. on my L24 block -- All works well.

I used the stock 240z fuel return line with out any trouble.

The problem I have RIGHT NOW is that the hood will not close

with the stock 280z air cleaner mounted in the 280z factory position ( to

high ).

Any thoughts on what to do? I plan to try putting the mounting

flange on the bottom of the radiator support instead of on top.

My intake and exhaust manifolds are going on tonight, and wiring will be happening next week. What this about a pump relay under the dash that someone mentioned?

I might have to grab all the relays from a 280zx somewhere. Any other tricks other than the fuel lines/pump ?

i'd also look to swap in a 74.5-76 fi fuel baffled fuel tank. hate to have your newly fi'd z fuel starve, get some air into the lines and lean out, possibly cooking the engine. the above listed tank will fit perfectly into the 240z's. most of the v8 swap guys are doing the same thing to avoid engine damage.
