Posted August 24, 201212 yr comment_399687 Hi All: Haven't posted much. But I'm starting to focus on my '78 280Z more now that I've brought it back to life. So I finally got around to adjusting the valves for the first time since I've owned it. Drove it for a couple years after I bought it. Then it sat under a tarp for 5 or 6 years. Then I brought it back to life a couple years ago. Finally have it pretty driveable again. Anyhow, as this was the first time I've actually pulled the valve cover I was a little surprised at the state of the cam shaft. But I'm used to the cam shafts on my motorcycles which are all pretty shiny and clean. So my question is whether the cam shaft in my Z is supposed to look like this. Or if it is shot and I ought to get a new one. There does not seem to be any pitting, scoring, or gouges in the cam lobes. But it does appear to have quite a bit of discoloration. Is that normal? Thanks all Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/44194-cam-shaft-condition/ Share on other sites
August 24, 201212 yr comment_399689 Quite normal from lack of oil changes I would guess. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/44194-cam-shaft-condition/#findComment-399689 Share on other sites
August 24, 201212 yr Author comment_399690 Well... can't speak for previous owners, but I've been increasing the frequency of changes. Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/44194-cam-shaft-condition/#findComment-399690 Share on other sites
August 24, 201212 yr comment_399692 Definitely shows your wipe pattern. Everything looks smooth. I'd imagine that it would clean off with steel wool, though I wouldn't recommend using it due to the metal strands you'd leave behind. August 25, 201212 yr comment_399699 Just get the valve adjustment right and drive it more. Looks like a thin film of old oil just adhered to the cam lobes, and is slowly wiping off as you drive it. IF you got the lash correct, and it is not making any weird noises or popping out of the exhaust or intake as you drive it, just have fun.
