ignition problem

put key into ignition and turned it on. key wouldn't turn to start. it is now stuck in the on position and i can't turn it left or right. won't pull out either. the stearing wheel is not locked, it turns freely. any help greatly appreciated before i have to call a lock smith.

jiggled key and started car but i couldn't turn car off. key stuck in on postion again. had to pop clutch in 4th to turn off the engine. will try more jiggy tomorrow to see if i can get to off and remove key. somethin isn't right.

Had this happen to me before. I ended up removing the ignition switch from the steering column, partially taking it apart and turning it from the back. I probably cleaned and lubed it too. Hasn't happened since.

This is often a symptom of the backside of the ignition switch going out - the part with the electrical connections. Replacement does not require removal of the switch assembly from the steering column, no new ignition key, ...etc. If you have no more problems, lucky guy. If sticking returns, there are lots of posts in the forum to get you through this fairly easy fix.
