btw I agree with Arne that a round muffler is better as it keeps the "noise chamber" out of the rear quarter cavity where the noise is "enhanced".

Ideally the whole exhaust should be under the car for cooling and quiet.

Based on the Datsun dealer parts catalog the original exhaust had an oval "pre-muffler" near the center of the car with a round "muffler with tip" in the rear. Apparently they also used a sealer in the joints that was injected with a syringe.
