Window Etching - Security

I saw a show last night on the Discovery channel. It was a documentary about the stolen car problems we have here in the US.

One piece of advice they mentioned was self-window-etching kits. These kits allow you to etch all of the windows in your car with serial numbers. Point? Car thieves usually don't replace all of the windows in a car because it's too expensive. If they see window etching, they usually move on. This is, at least, true about the thieves stealing the cars for use in a chop shop.

Has anyone seen these kits around?

The dealership I worked for in Las Vegas did this. They had a company that came out and etched the windows on our stock. Now this was two years ago. At that time they used a little keypad palm pilot that would print the tape that had the numbers and letters on it. Then stick the tape on the glass and wipe the acid over the tape let it sit for a few sec. and clean glass. They where very easy clean and small.

I am not sure how they could do the lettering and numbers theres so many just for one car. But who knows. If somone knows please post it.

Move to Australia, for a nominal fee, the RAA etches all windows, and records the details of the etching in a database, however this only stops thieves with an intention of selling on the car, not just stealing an easy car, thrashing it then torching it.
