August 30, 201212 yr comment_400232 The 1972 240Z FSM, PD chapter, has the ratios the other way around from the Zhome site. Kind of confusing. August 30, 201212 yr comment_400236 As stated above, a stock 240 with a manual tranny should have a 3.36 diff. With the gearing of a 5 speed (certainly for an '83 5 speed) you will have very tall gearing. This means that you can cruize at 85 mph on the highway at 2,300 rpm but getting off the line will be very sluggish. August 30, 201212 yr comment_400238 To confirm, either the 72 FSM is wrong or the zhome numbers are wrong for 1972. The FSM says the 4 speed is 3.9, zhome says the 4 speed is 3.36.I've always heard that 3.36 is the stock 240Z R180 ratio, but the FSM says otherwise. August 30, 201212 yr comment_400246 The tranny and diff (3:90) were made for each other and are a very nice combo. If you have room take the engine as well. You'll end up using a 280 driveshaft. Lights and trim if in good shape are always needed by others.I agree, I would take the engine, even if i was'nt planning to use it. Its such a shame to scrap a F54 block. With only 120k its probably still original and not oversized. The P79 head is one of the better heads on the L series. A lot of people prefer them over the N42/47 because of the high squench chambers. August 31, 201212 yr comment_400292 Regarding the brakes, make sure you get the rear caliper brackets at the very least. Great for a S30 rear disc swap. August 31, 201212 yr Author comment_400296 Thanks for all the info guys. I'll get as much from it as possible. All the mechanicals look to be in good shape and I'm going to go run it for a bit and do a compression test on the motor to check it's condition before deciding how much to take. August 31, 201212 yr comment_400305 Ben just remindered me. If its an early model and has a master cylinder with horizontal bolt patern. Save it too. Its a direct bolt in on the S30 when u do a big brake upgrade or rear disc upgrade:classic: Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/44252-what-to-take-off-an-83-zx/?&page=2#findComment-400305 Share on other sites
