what would cause my 240 to die at speed. it does this frequently, i have a new alternator, battery, voltage regulator. when it happens, ususally i can crank it up again and drive on, and sometimes it will die again. could it be the carbs?, fuel pump? also when it happens, it usually is just the engine that dies not the power ( the radio and lights are still on). i don't drive very it often because of this. it started doing this 2 months ago.

I had this same problem, car would die, I'd look under the hood for something wrong, and it would start again. If it dies like right now, It's most likely electrical, dies slowly, fuel related. Next time it dies, leave the key on, pop the distributor cap, use a screwdiver and open and close the points, no spark, think coil or condensor or wiring.

Good luck

Another thing that I did was put an in-line fuel filter that was glass so I could see the fuel supply going to the motor. That way when it dies next time you have a quick reference as to what the fuel is doing...

i converted my ignition system to breakerless electronic ignition about 5 years ago. this problem just started about 2 months ago. i put a new see through fuel filter on a week ago and haven't noticed any particles in it. i drove to work 2 days ago and did fine on the road. it did cut off two times when i went to park it. i don't drive it everyday since i can't trust it.
