my hand brake snaped off,,,,HELP

morning bump............I am thinking in a ''mickey mouse fix'', use a spare clutch/brake cable from my Vespa, cut it to size, put it in the cable yolk and secure it to the handle , the Vespa cable has adjusters at both ends,what do you think :ermm:

As to the Vespa cable - a marriage of Japanese and Italian can't be all that good in this instance. The Vespa cable might not be strong enough for the load. More critical - if you run it from the ebrake handle to the yoke, it will be at an angle that will put undue pressure on one side of the ebrake cable, i.e. not balanced pressure to both sides and both wheels.

My $.02 - you get what you pay for!

Before ordering parts, check all areas of the ebrake cable for any signs of wear, rust, deterioration of the outer cover. Replace now if damaged. When parts in hand, get the car up on a lift. Pull the driveshaft and possibly the safety strap over the nose of the diffy to get room to work. After everything is installed but BEFORE getting the driveshaft back in, lower the car and check the ebrake handle operation and travel range. If needed, raise car and adjust the long rod, recheck ebrake handle travel. When all is feeling good, lock down all the rod connections, reinstall safety strap and driveshaft. "Drift Away" as the old song says.

Jim,thanks for the pointers , this was not expected, I just replace the pads a few week ago as preventive maintenance on all corners and it all look fine, the E brake was inspected and it look in proper functional order. This is part of the'' Joys '' of owning a 40 yr, in my case old/and not so old car. This repair I believe that is doable by yours truly. :cool: Kurbycar32, thanks for the offer on your old parts but new bits is what ''FRANKIENZVETTEZE'' wants ;)

I'm interested to know if it would have been easier to buy a whole new parking brake cable assembly system from Motorsport, Zcar Source, or your local dealer? There are plenty of resources where you could have tried and I would encourage you to try there if you can.

Mike, the cables are fine , the rod that connects to the yolk broke and its connecting hardware vanished , so I am ordering those bits in hopes to remedy this. I don't see the complete assembly offer for sale as a unit, if you know how to get the complete assembly , please send info..:cool:

grantf.....yep I posted this episode and hope to get it solve ASAP, looks that the rod is not an easy part to secure, but the spring washers,cotter pins,trunnion pins,clevis pins are on catalog. In the hunt and not a happy camper. :disappoin

You do know that you can likely find everything you need to fix the rod assembly at the Home Depot, it's not like you have a factory original car that you are trying to keep bone stock.

It may be a little harder to make the parts yourself, depending on skill level of course, but you will save time and money and get that "I did it" proud feeling taking the DIY route. You will also get a stronger rig if you know what you are doing. God helps them what helps themselves.
