Zsled Posted January 26, 2003 Share #1 Posted January 26, 2003 Ok, I am eyeing a set of these carbs, they came off of a L26, and they are on a cannon intake. My question is, Will they work good on l24 pretty much stock and will they be ok when this l24 is warmed over really soon?Need advice fast. 2ManyZs Posted January 26, 2003 Share #2 Posted January 26, 2003 I don't have any experience with the downdrafts, but they have got to be better than a set of flat tops.... They are a bit more flexible as far as adjustability, so if the price is right, give them a shot.
Zsled Posted January 26, 2003 Author Share #3 Posted January 26, 2003 Let me rephrase the question. My 240z has SU's Round tops it is a 72'I have a line on some of the carbs listed above and want to know if they will flow the same or better than the su's since they were on a L26 260 74'. 2ManyZs Posted January 26, 2003 Share #4 Posted January 26, 2003 My opinion only here, but I'd save the money and when you get the mods going on the L-24 find a set of triple Weber 40 or 45 DCOE's, Dell Orto 40 DHLA's or Solex 40's. I don't think the Weber DGV 36's are enough of an upgrade over the round top SU's to warrant the cost on a stock engine, or even a midly modified one. The DGV"s were a popular upgrade on the 73 240's and early 260's to get rid of the flat top SU's that were a PITA at times.
Mudge Posted January 26, 2003 Share #5 Posted January 26, 2003 I have these carbs, and they need to be rejetted on the idle side. I just RECENTLY figured out a 15 MPG issue with these carbs, as for now I'm happy with them however on my 73 and will probably continue to use them with my F54 NA buildup. There is a bit of a learning curve if your not a carb guy, since not alot of people seem to use them anymore, AND those that have didn't figure out the MPG issue and just got rid of them it seems.Default idle jets on mine were 50/50 although for the Ford 1.6L (1 carb) they are listed as 55/50, I'm currently 75/60 but will try 75/70 and see if that changes things. If you do the "upgrade" and get stuck, let me know and I can help figure out MPG issues, OR Pierce Manifolds was very helpfull, I spoke with a young guy Doug and he explained why my MPG was so poor. I thought I was pig rich and I was lean at idle, and overcompensating with my idle screw, which caused richness off idle, doh!I dont yet know MPG because I just got these jets on thursday, but I'm in the 20 something area, I have heard of 24-28 with these carbs on I believe a 2.8L setup. ZmeFly Posted January 27, 2003 Share #6 Posted January 27, 2003 if your really modifying itmy 72 240 i had done the following, 460 lift 270280 duration cam, larger valves, all new valve train, engine bored .40 over, flat top pistons, crank balanced, the whole lot basically, electronic ignition and what not.anyway to get to the point the weber 32/36's wouldnt give me enough fuel at 5500 and above. i would get some pinging and a little loss in power.i got inventive with this and made them work having both barrels open up at 4000 rpm though that made gas mileage crappy.you can get them to work but id stay with the su's, if you get wilder you can always go with tripples or stand alone fi your choice but the dual downdrafts arent really all that.thats my .
Mudge Posted January 27, 2003 Share #7 Posted January 27, 2003 Since in default form they have enough fuel for 3.2L I dont know how they dont have enough headroom if jetted properly, to support the power, but then again I dont have a hot F54 either to know for sure.Looking at the jets available though, I dont see how they wont work, guess I may find out eventually. texasz Posted February 5, 2003 Share #8 Posted February 5, 2003 Ok, I will first say that I do not know much if anything about carbs so please be kind. I'm trying to learn as quickly as I can as much as I can about Z cars.Is SU a brand name? Are SUs stock on Z cars? What's the difference between round tops and flat tops? Are round tops stock on any Z cars? If so which one(s)? Does anyone have a pic of both round tops and flat tops so that I know what I'm looking at?
