rear glass chrome strips

Anybody out there have any ideas or know how to replace the chrome moulding within the rubber moulding around the rear hatch glass without taking the window out and risk

breaking the window and never getting another one with working defroster lines.

Please let me know

I replaced the right side trim on my rear window while it was still on the vehicle.

Just remove the corner pieces and carefully pry the long trim sections out. To install the new pieces, I found it beneficial to use one of those cheap plastic narrow putty knifes. You risk tearing the narrow rubber lip which holds the trim pieces if use a metal screwdriver. Also, spray some silicone around the trim, which should help with the installation.

Last, make sure you use some rubbing alcohol to remove any residual silicone in the area where the end pieces will go. Apply some weather strip adhesive to those pieces and tape it down with masking tape overnight.

It can be done while the glass is in, it is just a matter of taking your time and being very careful if the weatherstripping is not brand new. If it is even just a bit dry-rotted you do run the risk of it cracking even more and/or having small pieces of the lip that holds the trim break off.

You can use a plastic bondo spreader to loosen the rubber from the trim and hold it so you can slide the trim underneath.

Work very slowly and don't try to pull the trim too hard as it is very flimsy and it will kink quickly and permanently.

It can be done either way, but if you aren't replacing the weatherstripping with new, you will probably end up damaging the weatherstripping more by trying to remove it and then re-install it.

Sometimes it is best to have an extra set of hands while doing this, so if you can get a helper, it will be much easier while trying to re-install the trim. It gets kinda tough to try to hold both sides of the rubber out of the way while trying to set the trim.

I did with new weather stripping when I put my car back together and it was tough then. I had to get my wife to help me. There was no way I could hold the little rubber lip up and out of the way and push the trim into place at the same time.

Definitely get some help and work an inch at a time. If you try to rush you will surely bend/kink the trim pieces.

If you do bend though, let me know. I'll make you a really good deal on the extras I still have. Kept them in case I screwed mine up the first time.

I have a friend thats a glass tech by trade and the chrome is always the last the go in.He doesn't want the gasket to roll and kink the chrome.He uses liquid soap to help it slide.Clean up can't get easier! Two people are required for rookies.Put wide masking tape on the paint side of the Gasket.That give you a little scratch Oop's protection. Daniel OH yeah,the warmer that rubber is the better.Darn sure don't try it when its cold.
