Posted October 16, 201212 yr comment_404390 If you were to have someone famouZ, say John Morton, autograph something for you, would you use a part from the car? I've seen people getting the sunvisor or glovebox door autographed. Either of those isn't easy to remove. I have a kind of autograph book made up of wire bound note cards, so the ink (Sharpie ink) doesn't bleed through, and it's stiff enough to write on otherwise. What else is there, unless you get spare parts and take them with you? Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/44685-getting-autographs/ Share on other sites
October 16, 201212 yr comment_404391 The difference is in what the autograph means to you. A painting is more valuable if its signed by its creator. Even better if the creator is famous. I feel the same way about my Z. It is much more meaningful to me that Mr. M's signature is "on" my glovebox door, rather than on a piece of paper in the glovebox. October 16, 201212 yr comment_404394 I had Matsuo san sign my sun visor a few years ago. I've had John Morton sign a number of art pieces. I once had Dan Gurney sign a race car model. I have numerous Mr. K signatures on all sorts of things. I also have a fairly large collection of driver autographs I collected from all the ALMS races I have gone to over the years; mostly on posters but a few t-shirts. October 16, 201212 yr comment_404418 I was at The Classic Motorsports Magazine Mitty at Road Atlanta in 2010 when Pete Brock was there. I had two posters all ready for him to sign. One was for me, and the other was for my nephew. My copy hangs at my desk at work. I didn't get to see John Morton up close, though. At the 2011 ZCCA convention, I had a nice drawing of a BSR 240Z that Bob Sharp graciously autographed for me, and I promptly put it back in the frame. October 17, 201212 yr comment_404459 I worked all the SCCA Runoffs @ MidOhio as a Pit Marshall. One year my wife spoke with Paul Newman as he left pit road. I told her only speak to him about racing, she told him about our Z, which was parked across from Pit road. She said, he was very pleasant, and he autographed her hat. She has two autographs on her hat, Paul Newman and Tony Shumacher (NHRA), our nephew was on his Top Fuel Dragster team at the time. October 17, 201212 yr Author comment_404473 That's very cool. The only significant autograph I have is from **** Rutan, at Oshkosh before his global record-setting flight. October 17, 201212 yr comment_404482 I taped a silver Sharpie to the inside of my glove box just before leaving for Z-Con10, just in case someone 'special' came near my car. Sure enough, to my surprise, Mr. Matsuo came to my car and examined it, he really liked the color, and happily signed the inside of my glove box door. I was still shaking 5 minutes later. October 17, 201212 yr Author comment_404485 I suppose a spare glovebox door is a reasonable thing to have if you go someplace where you might meet someone like Mr. Matsuo or Mr. Brock. Unless you keep a 10mm socket or Phillips screwdriver tucked away, some kind of fancy card taped inside the glovebox is about as good in a pinch. I keep my ad-hoc autograph book in the glovebox nevertheless. I had breakfast with Mr. Jordain several times during ZCON 2008, and it never occurred to me to get his autograph. He's just too nice a guy, and I had to get back to the car to get to wherever the event was for that day. October 17, 201212 yr comment_404492 I have managed to get autographs on a variety of items ranging from handing John Kennedy one of his campaign brochures to handwritten letters from designer Raymond Loewy mentioning my Avanti's serial #. I have the Granetelli brothers signatures on a plain piece of paper, again referencing my Avanti's serial # and Ferry Porsche's autograph on a few items like books, programs, and plain paper (my wife got that one at his birthday party). Tom Kellogg, one of the Avanti design team members, autographed an Avanti dealership folder containing samples of Avanti upholstery, and paint chips. I have no signed car parts, but envy those who do.Dennis Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/44685-getting-autographs/#findComment-404492 Share on other sites
