a car cover that works?....

i've gone thru every car cover at Pep boys, and none of them are actually waterproof - has anybody purchased a car cover that's waterproof and works?? any help is appreciated!

I just purchased a all weather cover from BRE. It seems to be a nice fitted cover but I do not know how it would do in the rain. jlp

I have a 6 layer cover and as above , after rain I end up washing it , so it seems as useless as an ashtray on a motorcycle

Maybe totally waterproof would cause condensation in damp weather. Just got my 2nd BD4000 from black dragon. The other lasted four years of full time use. Well, lasted 3 but I used it 4. A real P.O.S. when it was done. Breathable is good, OK? It kept the rain off fine when it was new. Previously had a cheap one from msa that was done in less than a year. Gotta have one though, I guess. Birds, trees and sunshine are nice, but they don't care about your car.

I would leave the car in rain rather than cover it. Depends if it leaks I suppose, but condensation of a covered car is a killer. Better to let it breath. The only time I would use a cover is for the sun.

Because car covers are supposed to breath. A waterproof membrane over your car will cause it to rot, trapping the moisture inside the car, inducing mildew and, of course, rust. There are several products that can be applied to the outside of the cover to make it more water resistant such as tent fabric treatments, but the stuff has to be used regularly. Car covers are temporary and should never be used long term. The other thing to consider is what you are going to do with a wet car cover when you want to drive. Fold up your wet cover in the morning, drive to work, put the cover back on, and now you're wet from dealing with the thing and the inside of your car is wet! I have a love / hate relationship with my car covers.

I had a 73 240Z for a few years that had been kept in a garage and covered. The car cover that it came with looked like solid vinyl with a different soft material on the underside and apparently did not breathe. The cover worked okay while the car was garaged but when I used it outside not knowing about breathability it fogged the paint on the hood. (anyone have that car?- it was in Northern Calif)

IMO, car covers are to keep the dust and debris off the car, and to help decrease damage in case someone or something touches the body. the only "cover" that is "waterproof" is an enclosed building or a giant plastic bubble.

I have to agree with this. Car covers are only good for storage for short periods. You cannot put a car cover over a dusty car or it will be scratched. You can really only use them after they have been washed and are perfectly clean. Putting a car cover over a dirty car means now the car cover will have dirt inside it and it must be washed. I have a car cover and only use it when I know I will not be driving the car for a short while. But I have to clean the car first before I let it touch the cover.

I sold car covers for many years and as many above have noted, you don't want a waterproof one. Car covers are best used for keeping the sun off the paint and interior and for blocking bird droppings that will etch the paint. You need to wash a cover regularly to remove grit that will scratch the paint when taking the cover off and on as well as when the wind blows and the cover flaps against the paint. Covercraft makes great custom fit covers.
