Looking for Antenna parts for my 1972 Z

Are you looking for an OEM equivalent or a functional power antenna for a modern radio?

Good luck trying to find one that works with you up/down switch.

If you have a modern radio with an integral antenna signal lead, it is easy to convert the existing wiring to work with a modern unit. Just did mine this week. The wires running back to the power antenna are Blue/red stripe and Blue/white stripe. The plain blue wire connected to the switch is the +12V coming from the accessory position on the ignition switch. Pushing the switch ports +12v to one of the striped leads running back to the antenna motor. Voltage runs through the electric motor and returns via the chasis ground.

In the modern power antenna, the chasis ground remains but there is a relay that controls the up/down motion. It has two input leads, red and blue. The red lead is hard wired to +12volts, and the blue lead is tied to the antenna control signal on your modern radio. When the radio is turned on, +12v is sent to the blue lead energizing the relay on the antenna. This commands the antenna to extend. When the radio is turned off via the knob and/or when the ignition is turned off, the +12v is removed, the relay de-engerizes and the motor is commanded to retract the antenna. The power to drive the antenna moter - up or down - comes from the red lead. The blue lead only activated the relay.

So what I did was to connect the red lead to the Blue/Red striped lead and the Blue lead to the Blue/white striped lead at the antenna.

Under the dash, disconnect the switch and connect the leads as described above.

The blue/red lead can be connected in one of two ways. If you jumper it to the blue lead on the plug, it will be powered through the accessory position on the ignition switch. This will only allow the antenna to retract by manually turning off the radio. In this configuration the antenna will remain extended when the radio is on and you turn off the engine with the key.

The other way to power it is to tap into the green/red stripe lead running to the horn relay. This provides +12v to the antenna at all times. In this configuration, the antenna will automatically retract when you turn off the ignition regardless if the radio is left on.

Do you know what "parts" you need? The first thing to do - is take your present antenna apart to see if the drive strap is broken [the long nylon rope that attaches to the top end of the antenna}, then check the electric motor to see if it runs, then look at the gears inside. In the mean time - I'll look to see what I have... but wouldn't want to send you stuff that won't fix your problem.

As I recall - you have to Ground the body of the antenna if you run it out of the car.. for that matter it needs a good body Ground to run in the car.

Ok I have the unit I pulled out. The motor pulls but the spool is frozen. Had to cut off the antenna tubing and nylon rope to get it off. The drain clogged at some time and the grease was contaminated with water. You can have the motor is that's the problem.

And yes, you need to ground the body to run it outside of the car.

BTW the strap on the bottom of the antenna is attached with a wingnut on the bottom. Much easier to remove the wing nut than the screw on the antnena body.

Carl,

I currently have two. Both have the wrong mast. I took the second one (from parts car) apart, the motor runs and the gears look good, but the nylon was stuck in a bunch of corrosion. I would consider that a good motor unit. The one that is on my car runs but does not work, and the mast is not correct. So at the least I need a good pointed tip mast.

Bummer... so far I haven't found a good "pointed tip" mast.. seems the parts I have are mostly from Series I cars. I have an "Antenna Repair Kit" from Nissan - the kit consists of the antenna body and nylon drive belt. I was thinking that might work - but it has a round tip on the antenna, unlike anything I've seen on a 240Z. So form, fit and function may be the same - but the Nissan replacement part is consmetically different. I have a couple other places to look, but I don't hold out much hope..

I will keep an eye out for you Jerry! I don't visit the junkyards are frequently as I used to, but your thread just reminded me of the antenna i pulled a while ago. I got a new battery and I just tested it by putting on the old one... and it works! :D Hopefully I will hit the junkyard again soon.
