Seriously though, that car looks to be in great condition. So whats the plan then, restore to stock? Modify? Race?

I'm guessing they (the mirrors) came off a small diesel truck.

Fixed the headlights last night. Wasn't a wiring short like the previous owner said it was. Just a worn plastic lug in the switch, and a broken solder connection. Resoldered, and replaced the lug in the switch with a new one in i made from the end of a bic pen. Works fine.

I'll replace the lug with something more permanent later.

Plans. Havent decided yet. Probably mostly stock. Definately have to get a front spoiler, new mags, and strip and repaint it (Not Red)to find and remove all the hidden rust. Engine might need new rings. Suspension migh need some work too. All depends on what fund$ are available.

Car looks great. Looks like its got very little rust. Thats gotta be a big bonus. Nothing wrong with the red either, if its the original colour.

Mr Camouflage, it is great to see your new Z. I have to say it looks great and should be a good starting point.

You say it is a 72 Z what month is it and what is the chassis number.

Its a Feburary 72, or at least thats when it recieved its Australian compliance plate. I suppose there is no way to tell exactly when it was built.

I have no idea when compliance plates are fitted. Australian cars probably get them in the factory. Dont know about Imports. Probably when they roll off the boat from Japan. Whats the fascination with chassis numbers?

My engine is really smokey, so it looks like i'm not gonna be able to drive it around for a while and have some fun. (I would get stickered by the cops), So i may as well start on the resto (i've already pulled half of the interior out). Only problem is no Funds at the moment, and nowhere to put the car. The garage is full of furniture, untill the house extention is built.

Mr Camouflage, this is fantastic matching numbers and an early 72. Great buying. The reason for the interest in the body numbers comes back to an interest in the cut overs from 71 to 72, one of the guys over in the west had a 72 Z in the UK before he came over to Perth, his body number was lower than my 12/71 Australian compliance, built in 10/71. Now i would your car is probably built 12/71 to be 2/72 compliance.

Now the interesting bits my car has the early console and yours has the later one. My car body number is HS301638 and yours is HS3010527 and they are less than three months apart on the production line. this is the point we are chasing what is the change over point, because you cant build that many cars in 2 months. Also there are a number of ways you can work out the production date of your car, a number of components actually carry production dates on them.

Ask HS30H about this as he is right up on it.

Does anyone else have a HS30 Z that falls between these body numbers, let us Know.

Ah, so yours has the ciggie lighter in the center console, and mine has it in the dash.

Strange how yours has a 4 digit number and mine has a 5 digit number. Maybe they added a digit when they changed over.

HS30 XXXX early model, HS30 XXXXX later model? maybe. Alan....

So yours doesnt have the storage bins?

My 72, looks exactly like my old one, but in a lot nicer condition (less rust). It's had some rust cut out, and metal welded in in the rear sills just infront of the wheels. My old one was august 72, maybe. I'll have a look and see if I can find some old rego papers for the chassis number.

I just realised my rear sway bar is missing. Anyone know where I can get one?

And fronts spoilers. Whats available in Oz?

Yes - Nissan added an extra couple of digits to the HS30 chassis number codes, and this was to coincide with the release of the "Fairlady 240Z" ( "HS30" VIN prefix ) models in the Japanese market in October 1971. Previous to that they only had the 2-litre models over there.

If you have call to search for parts for an HS30 made in that few months of production around late 71 and early 72, then it can get confusing. Quite a lot of Nissan's own data from parts manuals and the Sports Option lists gives a cut-off that seems to have been arbitrarily decided on as 01/72 ( I guess meaning that any HS30 made from January 1972 would have the extra digit in the number ) but in truth this seems not to be accurate.

Thats why its always fascinating to try to find the highest Export HS30 VIN number before the switch ( and the highest S30 "Home" market VIN number before the switch too ).

I used to own a UK-market "240Z" that was the Storage Bin type body, and that was marked "HS30-01916". My Fairlady 240ZG is "HS30-11856".
