Swapping out gas tanks?

So I'm thinking I am going to put a Camaro gas tank in the Datsun as I do the LS1 swap. This means that right about now I should start thinking about cutting out the spare tire well and modifying mount points before I prepare the car for painting. With that said...

  1. Do I have to remove the entire spare well, or can I leave a couple inches for storage out of it?
  2. Does anyone have suggestions on mounting tips for the tank?
  3. How much weight does this save when you consider empty tank weight (I believe the camaro tank holds more, right?)

And with that said, what's a used tank worth? It has no rust at all and I've sanded it down and going to paint it black again with the spray gun. Debating whether to sell or keep it (if it's worth like nothing).

I can't really answer your first 3 questions but I know some other members have either done this or installed fuel cells to serve as their fuel tank for their LS1. In regards of what to do with your stock gas tank. If I were you I would finish your plan of painting the tank since you already have it sanded down. Since it is in good shape it is definitely worth something to someone as many owners out there had rusty tanks. Once you cut your floor out I don't see the tank having much value for you unless you plan to pick up another Z that the tank will work in. In the end once it is painted and pretty take some good pics of it and post it up for sale. Owners dealing with rust would pay top dollar to get a tank that was ready to drop in. From a price standpoint I think starting at $150 is pretty fair, maybe even more if your tank turns out to be a show piece. Just my opinion though.

Thanks for the response. At least I know it's worth it to finish it.

As far as the other three questions go, I still can't find anything on weight with a quick Google search (and I'm lazy, LOL). But the 2001 Camaro tanks hold 16.8 gallons, compared to 13.2 looking around on spec pages. I've owned z28s in the past and they can get 30mpg no problem with light driving. If a car weighing a little more than half of that can get the same, that means range would be almost 500 miles to a tank. :D I like the possibility of that.
