72 OJ Posted December 7, 2012 Share #1 Posted December 7, 2012 (edited) I have been watching reruns of the Mecum Auctions that took place in Anaheim CA a few weeks ago, did not see a single Z . That made me realized that for 25 Grand + or - there is not much to grab if you want an iconic Classic sport car. Plenty of late 60's and mid 70's Camaros,Mustangs,Challengers,Corvettes at both ends of the coin as far as original #'s matching and restomoded that demanded well over 25 G's. I feel rewarded that I own a 1972 Z, yes mine demanded more than 25 G's , but she is not like a belly button that every body has one, she is not all Nissan but the LS1 conversion plus all the performance upgrades makes her a very special car. Your LS1 powered Z is definitely unique, both in how clean the install is and your car looks so stock from the outside. The Thursday and Friday Mecum auctions offer a lot of variety and in my opinion a lot of good deals depending on what you are going after. You won't ever see many Z's go up on the auction block. As you have seen you are lucky to see one. Z cars are not in the collecting spot light right now but of course those in the know are fully aware of them and what a good one is worth. Of course it is also very subjective as to how sporty and classic of a car one is looking for. Below are some nice ones I found on Ebay that seem to show well and look to be in good shape. You have to remember, buying a car at one of the classic car auctions almost always goes for a premium price and usually more than the car is really worth, even on the top end. Add in the 10% - 20% buyers fee and you quickly get int to the red. Classic sports and GT cars out there and a ton of them are well under $25K. Of course if you want an XKE or something of that caliper be ready to pony up double even triple the price point we are looking at. A big plus that its got an LS1 in it but its a dark purple El Camino, might be able to get it for cheap! Keep us posted on what you see and if you bring anything home. Not really sure what they are trying to accomplish. I don't think they or even the Nissan rep realized that the "explosion" on startup and rough idle was probably caused by a stuck carburetor fuel jet...and they didn't improve the situation by applying choke for an already up to temperture engine. If only an actual 240Z owner were there to correct them, then their lack of experience with this car wouldn't have influenced what they wrote in the article. The neophyte article writer didn't even seem like he knew how to operate the vent and heater controls. On a warm day, my 240Z is always very comfortable at speed if the foot vent is open. In general, each car is presented as appropriate for its era, yet similar in so many ways even though built 40 years apart. Both will entertain their drivers and that's what a sports car is all about.After I checked out an FRS at the local dealership this week, I reflected on what I might gain by owning one rather than my 41 year old Z. Other than a warranty, not much.
