Posted December 11, 201212 yr comment_408956 I read the story in Hagerty's magazine. Here's the video. IMHO, it's a great example of what happens when you take old cars out on trips without making sure they are properly prepared.Enjoy.Trip of Fools Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/45141-hagerty-trip-of-fools-video/ Share on other sites

December 11, 201212 yr comment_408968 Nice video. Can't believe that one would even turn the key without looking at the oil on a strange car though. December 11, 201212 yr Author comment_408973 Supposedly, the cars were checked out by mechanics. I think some people wasted their money by choosing their mechanic poorly and not giving detailed instructions to the mechanic. December 11, 201212 yr comment_408978 If a DATSUN 280Z is runing well - and you can drive it for 30 miles without incident - then you have a very good chance of driving it a couple thousand miles without incident. A couple of hand tools and minor spare parts onboard - and I'd take the chance..A Jensen Healey Interceptor on the other hand - NO Way...Was the A/C compressor the only thing that caused an issure on the 280Z?.. Really the video seemed to be about fixing the Healey..FWIW,Carl B. December 11, 201212 yr Author comment_408979 They also replaced the thermostat on the 280Z. That's why it looked like an RTV explosion under the hood. They gooped on the RTV, used their makeshift gasket, and drove on. Let's just say that I'm glad I don't know the LeMons "mechanic". I don't think I would want him within 50 miles of my cars. December 12, 201212 yr comment_409037 Cool video. Really a good example of how good our cars are. The 280z didn't need a whole lot of attention. The Jenson was a piece of crap. December 12, 201212 yr comment_409043 At least a fume filled cabin was associated with the Jensen and not a Z car.......... Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/45141-hagerty-trip-of-fools-video/#findComment-409043 Share on other sites
December 12, 201212 yr comment_409068 What a great video and a really cool drive. When i do this trip I will do it in the cool time if the year with one of my sons. My mind gets lost just watching the video. Somewhere to go and plenty of time to get there. The desert is a really beautiful and harsh place and no place to be when it's hot in a dodgy car. my hat goes off to people who can gey away and do things like this. You never forget periods like this in your life. I hope to see one of you on ROUTE 66 someday!
