siteunseen Posted December 16, 2012 Share #2 Posted December 16, 2012 "How to Rebuild Your Nissan & Datsun OHC Engine". I've rebuilt boat motors and a couple of dirt bike engines so I sort of knew a few things already. Then I bought a '77 280Z and decided I wanted to keep it so I bought that book off amazon.com for $20. I've spent $2,000 on that car so far and that book, by far, is the BEST $20 I'll ever spend. Can't say enough on how simple Tom Monroe makes the rebuild. Simple to follow instructions and advice with lots of pictures. It's the best instruction manual I've read. Buy it and read cover to cover about 3 times then rebuild your motor. Oh and I almost forgot the wisdom and kindness of the people on this forum. This forum plus that book and you'll think your a Nissan mechanic.
EuroDat Posted December 16, 2012 Share #3 Posted December 16, 2012 I dont know about the "modify" book, but I support siteunseen about the "rebuild" manual from Tom Munroe. Its the bibble for z engine rebuilders. The FSM has all the specs and stuff, but seems to miss detail and is not so clear to understand.
siteunseen Posted December 16, 2012 Share #4 Posted December 16, 2012 (edited) That's something I forgot to mention. I spent $50 having the FSM & EFI Bible printed and bound at a local print shop, before I found the Tom Monroe book, and I never used it on the motor just the transmission and steering rack. You can just find the page you need on your computer and print it out, that big 3 ring binder of paper was a waste off money. fuzze Posted December 16, 2012 Share #5 Posted December 16, 2012 Morning , '' are these books worth buying '' ? In MHO any books that teach are worth every penny . Frank Honsowetz 's book is sitting beside me as we speak and although my z is not for the track whatsoever , the info contained between the pages has allowed me to understand in great detail all of the inner workings of the OHC engine , as well as carburetion lubrication and parts # for a multitude of applications .Even a better thing about books is that it will keep on giving you information every time that you refer to it . Get them , keep them close and keep on learning !z ya later Chris

hls30.com Posted December 16, 2012 Share #7 Posted December 16, 2012 (edited) In my experience, if you don't have a long time Z fanatic with lots of free tome in your local area, between the FSM, the books you mentioned and "How to make your car handle", you have most of what you need to get the most out an essentially stock 280Z! You can't go wrong. Great holiday present for a Z nut-Amazon has the best prices I have found Edited December 16, 2012 by hls30.com
z_ya Posted December 17, 2012 Author Share #8 Posted December 17, 2012 Thanks guys, appreciate the responses. I have thought about it but was not sure if the books were full of useful info or not. But after reading through the posts that you all have submitted I am convinced that they should be pretty useful. Thanks.
Powderkeg Posted December 17, 2012 Share #9 Posted December 17, 2012 Two other books that have been very helpful are: "How to Restore Your Datsun Z Car" by Wick Humble and although it doesn't cover the Z car specifically there is a lot of useful information in "How to Keep Your Datsun Nissan L-Series/Z-series Alive" by Colin Messer (This is out of print but can be had on used book sites).Dave Ruiz
