Melspace02 Posted December 29, 2012 Share #1 Posted December 29, 2012 I been trying to get this poor z running right again. I just installed a thermostat housing and got everything plugged back in and its idling funny and farting. Today I installed new plugs and its still running the same in the video. Sounds kind of like a vacuum leak but I can't see anything. The car has been down for about 3 months. I was thinking maybe it is the AFM?? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Zed Head Posted December 29, 2012 Share #2 Posted December 29, 2012 (edited) Your video is in mp4 format, which my computer won't play. Is the problem no load, or while driving? What year car? Is it stock or has it been modified? Why did you install a thermostat housing? What all did you remove when you were working on the housing?Just a few questions that might help in figuring out the problem. Idling funny and "farting" sounds like a miss, which could be vacuum leak related or could be low fuel pressure or misplaced plug wires.Edit - actually Windows Media Player did open it and play it, but without the sound. Which doesn't really help. Edited December 29, 2012 by Zed Head

Melspace02 Posted December 29, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted December 29, 2012 Its a 76 280z , I removed the thermostat housing cause I had to drill out the holes due to a stripped bolt head. There is 4 sensors/switches in this housing. I replaced and installed all but one and used a plug. The one I didn't install was this one http://www.classiczcars.com/forums/thread35873.html. This should have nothing to do why its running this way. I double checked the wires and all is good. Here is another link to the videohttp://s31.beta.photobucket.com/user/Melspace02/media/20121225_1122521_zps4777afa3.mp4.html
Zed Head Posted December 29, 2012 Share #5 Posted December 29, 2012 Not sure why there's two threads now but the video worked great in this one. Your engine sounds almost exactly like mine did when I installed the plug wires in reverse rotation order. Then engine will start, even though, by firing order, it's only running on two cylinders. Maybe another cylinder or two gets enough timing to fire also. Anyway, I would re-check firing order and rotation - 1-5-3-6-2-4 in counter clockwise fashion. 240260280z Posted December 29, 2012 Share #6 Posted December 29, 2012 If you have EFI, look up the TVS switch and the idle cut feature. This is the typical cause of a 3k rev limit.

Melspace02 Posted January 2, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted January 2, 2013 Well I had sometime to go down and mess with the car today. I double checked the ignition wires and they where all plugged up right and I also checked the TVS this is how it looked This is it with the car off, I cleaned it up a little and the car is still the same :/... Im so frustrated as I want to drive it and im working 6 days a week right now and really don't want to take it somewhere as that could cost a fortune. What else should I check? Thanks in advanced
