Aftermarket Mirrors

Hey everyone. I recently got MSA's Classic Chrome Mirror set.

http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/50-1164

I was fully aware they didn't fit the stock mounts but was hopefully they'd fit the existing mounts for my current crummy plastic ones. And I liked them best for the price range. I pulled the old ones off, and it looks like the rear hole was about a half inch or so too far forward to be a simple swap. I'm very hesitant to drill extra holes in my door - especially ones more outward. Anyone have experience installing this mirror? Are there alternative methods to mount it? Automotive double stick tape? Or should I just suck it up and put a hole in her.

Thanks,

Alex

I don't think you'd be happy with attaching it with double stick tape. For best results, I suggest doing what the last sentence of the MSA mirror description says, "This mirror was not designed for the original mirror holes in the door, drilling is required."

I know you already bought them, but can you take them back? IMO they are, um.. Not the best looking mirrors for our cars.

We have talked about the original mirrors here as well as reproduction "originals" for the passenger's side. My understanding is that a limited run of them are nearly done, and that Motorsport is planning on selling them. You might want to inquire with them whether that is true.

If you elect to keep those ones that you bought, start drilling with a small bit and gradually work the size up so that you don't crack the paint.

I bought a set of those. I just drilled holes where necessary. Use the plastic base a template for the holes to make sure it seats right, it shouldn't be difficult. They fit really well.

I really like the way mine look. Much better than the old torpedo shape. Since we're giving opinions on esthetics. And having a passenger mirror is great, I don't know why Nissan didn't put one on originally.

I did have one problem with mine when they arrived. One of the lenses was warped and gave a fun-house mirror image. I called MSA and the guy I talked to said he'd not heard of that before but they paid for shipping back and replaced it. I was only out waiting time. Check the image before installing.

The one downside I found to the mirrors is that they're noisy in the wind. With the window down in the summer you can really hear it. I could cup my hand around the mirror and knock down the noise but it gets old after a while. If you have a quiet car and like to hear the scenery going by, they're a little irritating. I've had my eye out for better mirrors but haven't found them yet.

I'm sure they would. If thats true, I'd much rather have the original style, I just haven't been willing to fork out over $200 for a set of any of the current repros. I actually prefer these to the bullet style, my neighbor seems to have a set on his 280, and either way, theyre a big improvement from what I have. But if theres a run of the stock mirrors coming at a reasonable price, I'll just set these aside as backup, or return them. I need to send back a glovebox, anyway. Whatever fellow at the repro company made it did a damn poor job stapling it together.

A fellow on here has a set of MG MGB mirrors on his that I thought looked pretty good - and a little closer to stock - but they cost twice what the round MSA mirrors do. I'll definitely check the lenses before I proceed.

MSA was kind enough to confirm the rumors. A manufacturer is making a limited run of passenger mirrors to match the original driver side mirror. They will release more details mid next month. No price is set, but they anticipate them being fairly expensive. My guess is in the ballpark of the normal mirror, perhaps the set for $200. Ill hold off installing them for a bit.
