i have to remove my seats to repair the seat bottoms. the webbing has broke. what's the best way to remove them. all one piece out the door or out the hatch, or should i detatch the backs and remove? i fear ripping the interior with the bolts from the seat bottoms. tia

13 mm box end wrench...13 mm pass-through socket. Those tend to be able to fit best on my 260Z. It's slow going, but as mentioned in post #2, just leave the seatbacks on and pull the seat out the door. Keep track of the spacers, too.

1. Loosen and remove 4 nuts holding the seat to the brackets.

2. Lift seat and carefully manuever through fully open door.

3. Put the spacers back on the seat mounting screws and thread the nuts back on so as to keep everything together.

Remove the nuts from the rear mounts, first. Those are the most difficult to remove. If you removed the front mount nuts first, the seat will have a tendancy to teeter backwards making holding seat and removing the rear mount nuts a little more difficult.

my zed has a build date of 10/71 and is listed as a 72. i was informed that all 72 and newer have the spring bottom seats and that my seats must have been changed out with the earlier seats. can anyone confirm this info?

I do believe that is incorrect. I will check on my 73 if/when I get home.

is there an exact build date or vin number when the change occured?

I was wrong. My 73 has springs, not webbing. According to the parts catalog, there were several seats, but one of the change dates appears to be 12/71, so during the 72 model year.

My 11/71 has webbing under the seats - I'm the original owner. I also did not get self retracting seat belts, nor a red seat belt warning light on the cover over the fuse box, nor waring buzzer. Also have vertical rear window defroster lines. The newer cars 12/71 or some time after had springs in the seats so the seat belt warning light and buzzer sensor could be installed. They also got self-retracting seat belts, horizontal rear window defroster lines.

Some very early 72 Model Year Z's 09/72, came though without any "indentation" in the floor boards for the self-retracting seat belts as well. So there seems to have been a change over period of several months to add the things required by the 72 Safety Standards..

FWIW,

Carl B.

thankx carl

i called les to order seat foam and covers plus webbing and he told me that all 72 had springs and that my seats must not be original. my zed is setup like your car with pockets but no retractors. i'm going to check my seats out first to see if i only need repairs. they don't look to bad for wear but eventually i will have to replace foam and covers.
