first Gen Rx7

I was playing with my son this rainy afternoon and he picked up his latest hot wheel that I found him. A first gen RX7 with a LeMan Body kit in blue. Just a beautiful car from any possible angle. Has that great quirky silky rotary.

I was wondering if any of you ZED heads have ever owned a first GEN RX7 and what are you thoughts. The oldest one is some 8 years newer than my car.

Just curious. Not seriously thinking of selling the Zed, but I am thinking a first Gen RX7 would be a very fun first car for my oldest boy.

Had one myself. Was always tickled I could out run a 280 between street lights in it. At the time, I thought they looked better than the Z. All rpms and no torque though. Couldn't maintain 5th gear on any kind of an incline. Turning the AC on cost a full gear. Had only driven a 240 once in my life before owning the rx and thought the Z was more of a 'sports car'. Probably can't imagine ever owning another rx though. I don't think the quality of the car was the same although it was 'nicer'. Haven't been around the rx now for 25 years so am out of that circle, but not sure there is the enthusiam and aftermarket stuff for them as there is the Z. Might be. The mind set of the 80's was to drop a v6 buick into them as they were just underpowered. Have a buddy here in town with a 260 and a 1st gen rx. He drives the Z and works on the rx. Not sure even what its purpose is other than to try and make it into something it isn't. I might consider the 84 gsl se with the 13b motor and a turbo if the rest of the car were A+. I would not trade either of my 240's for it however. Mine was an 80 gs with the 12b.

Thanks for bringing back the memories though. I remember where I was when I had that car. Was a great time in my life..............

I bought an '84 new. Like the Idaho Kid said, all RPM no torque. Good car. I could drive the snot out of it on the track and autocross course. About equal to my Z of the time and if I recall correctly, in the same class. The design looks a little dated now to me, although I thought it was sexy as hell when I bought it. I had a GSL-SE with the rear discs and no sunroof. I think it ended up a Spec-7 car...

I bought an '81 new. It was great to drive, but the body was junk. The plastics in the car melted in the Texas sun, the electrical system has Lucas reliability, parts broke for no reason. When I was fed up with the car, I decided to sell it and bought a used '75 280Z -- best car I've ever had. For a few months I owned both.

Fast forward almost 2 decades decades, after my ex made me sell my '75 Z, my ex became my ex, and I sorely missed the Z. I bought my '78 to replace the hole left in my life. :) Then my partner wanted a convertible. The first gen Miata seemed an obvious choice, but I was terrified of having another experience like with the RX-7. Happily, Mazda seems to have improved considerably. The Miata is a great little car. The second engine (1.8L) is even kinda' good on torque.

I did like that little Wankel, though.

My dad had one in 79 i drove at 18.

A few years ago one was on CL i went to look at 3500.

ORG owner 70,000 mi car i towed it away at 800 bucks.

With a total of 2300 into the car it was a daily driver for three years .

I sold it on eBay for 3700 with a nice profit. I loved that car.

It was 83 gsl.

The new owner has a website The First Gen RX7 Experience | OpenDepth

I know nothing about RX7 but Hotwheels made 3 different color variation of that car. Blue, Black and White. Die cast cars are fun to collect!
