I have also used Devcon brand steel reinforced Epoxy on cylinder heads and fuel exposed parts.  Holds up much better than JB weld.

Well after digging into the MSDS literature for this stuff, I think I learned something interesting... The Marine Weld in the little tubes (they call it the twin tubs) looks to be the exact same stuff as the regular JB Weld. Same color, same strength, same MSDS. But the Marine Weld PUTTY  is a different animal.

So if you're all running out to purchase a blister pak of the twin tube version of Marine Weld thinking that it's going to be different than regular JB Weld, then you're in for a surprise. This stuff appears to be the same as regular JB Weld:

There's a bunch of products designed specifically for fuel tanks.  The putty is probably easier to use, the two part common JB Weld will run if it's not supported or in a thin film.

I have tried several different fuel and chemical approved epoxies and I have yet to find one that really works on sending units.  My late 260Z race car hasn't had a working fuel gauge for years because I have never found an epoxy that will hold up to constant fuel contact.  I would love to get it working again if somebody has a sure fix.  My sender was leaking through the terminals.

You might try some fuel tank liner, like Red-Kote.  Just a dab instead of a tank full.

I've had the JB Water Weld on for about two years now with no leaks around the electrical terminals. Proper prep is essential. I ( or rather my mechanic/slave ) took the sending unit out, cleaned it thoroughly around the terminals with a Dremel and SS brush. Then applied the Water Weld epoxy to both interior and exterior surfaces around the terminals. Seems to be working so far....

I have used Seal All Goop for a gas tank repair when the tank had rust holes at the seams. Ran it another five years or so with no leaks...

Hello ladies and gents

Well the most dreaded thing has happened, the unit itself is now leaking. I replaced the o ring a few months back and everything was peachy. Came out this past Monday to find a fairly largish puddle of fuel under my car. Took it to the shop today and long and behold the unit itself is leaking. Being that's its a 76, it appears that these aren't really available anywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions other than JB welding it? Is there a aftermarket replacement I can use?

+1  this is good stuff. cover the inside of the sending unit and you should be good to go
