Shifter Pivot Bushing

Recommended Posts

I know I'm probably making this hard but I hate to break a perfectly good shifter pivot bushing. Anyone know the correct way to get this off without breaking it. Its the plastic cup type bushing at the bottom of the shifter in a 5 speed. (Goes over the little pivot ball end) Its from a later 5 speed. (Probably 79-81)

Thanks for any words of wisdom.

Well, the only way that I removed these is to use an adjustable wrench and snug it up on the shaft underneath it, then short of pop it off. The adjustable wrench will help keep the plastic from getting damaged. It should not take much force. Lube and replace in reverse order. BTW - when I replaced mine, I used Brass Bushings on the Pin, which I thought were much more durable and provide a tighter feel. Good luck.

Put it in boiling water for 5 minutes then pull it off using a bench vice and a washer. Its a bit hard to explain, but you can cut a slot in a flat washer. The washer helps distribute the force on the cup. I did that to save mine while I was waiting for a new one.

The part nr. is 32861-N4200 and costs about $2.50. Trying to save it to save money is a bit pointless...

Thats basically what I've tried so far but it doesn't want to come off peacefully. I'll try the adjustable wrench. That appears to be the only way. I'm going back with the brass pin bushings as well. Thanks for the input.
