Rebuild E31 head...  Next week the engine is going back together and into the 240Z again !

Looks good!  It has the later styled spray bar like I'll be using on mine, or at least I think it's a later style.  My E88s have the one with the big Phillips head screws bolts in them.  The one I have like your's came off a N47 that had a drilled cam and the spray bar.  9/'76 build date, early '77 on the paperwork.

@ Siteunseen: I have no idea really, E31's didn't come with a spray bar right ?

The E31 & E88 came with the one on bottom, I think.  The N42 had the newer design, the one on top.

 

I bought an N42 that had been changed over to internal oiling cam and block off plates on the cam towers.  Spray bars are prone to failure, so as Captain Obvious says "CHECK YOUR SPRAY BARS".

I'm going to adjust the carbs a little tomorrow and also the ignition timing, but for the rest she's running fine

Thanks   Yeah she's running fine, real smooth. Just drove it a bit this afternoon but the temp outside is to hot for the old lady, I had to put her on the side of the road for a while to cool down ( the temp gauge got near 240/250 ). Temps around 25c are just fine, today it was 30c and that's to hot for her, if there isn't enough ( cool ) wind to cool it down. I guess these cars are made for cooler weather..

These cars will take hot weather. I have run them hard in the deep south of the US in 90-100dF temps. I would think if she doesn't like high temps there is another issue somewhere...

Bart, You might need to get the radiator cleaned.

Years ago I had a MKII Escort and it would overhaet in weather over 40 degc. I ended up putting a Capri radiator in it. My friends 240Z never had that problem and it was standard with no cooling mods or upgrades.

Yeah sure you can see it next weekend

 

I found there's nothing wrong with the engine but I guess it's a faulty temp sensor.... Was driving in the afternoon when it cooled down and it still got all the way to 250 but the engine didn't feel that hot when opening the hood.

 

I measured with an infra red temp gun on the thermostat housing and it says +- 80c.. while the dash gauge goes all the way to the right, but when I unplug it it goes all the way to the left, so I assume it's the temp sensor..

 

You guys are right, it should cool enough, and it does seemingly !
