Lost key! Replacing tumblr, now can't lock the door

I'm so stupid I lost my 240z key and I don't have spare key.

I was planning to replace key anyway.

I have a whole set of replacement tumblr.

After struggling unlock the door using wire hunger, I managed to open the door.

Remove door inside panel and replace the tumblr.

Now, I can't lock the door. When I insert key and turn the cylinder there are too much loose connection.

Does anyone have tips to adjust lock?

I usually hold off to allow others to chime in, but the game(s) must have everyone distracted.

The plastic piece you have in two pieces is usually on one of the rollers for the window mechanism. Nice to have, but I don't think you'll have much trouble for not having it. Best I've been able to discern is that it's to either keep the roller in the track on the window pane, or to keep the roller under a slight amount of pressure and therefore in line in the track. Others may have a better or more accurate explanation.

As far as to why you're not locking now, it may be that the position of the lock and / or the tab on the back side has shifted sufficiently to NOT allow the locking mechanism to travel properly or to be just short (or long) and therefore not permit the lever to rotate.

Tried your video, but it didn't play for some reason. I'll try again later and maybe I can offer more,.

After getting it to play, I can't offer much. Check that you have a Left tab on that lock and that the shaft on the lock isn't too worn to properly actuate it.

I'm not sure but I don't think that there should be so much slop between the lock sand the lever. As you turn the key the lever should move with it. Yours moves together and then the key turns without turning the lever. At least that how the video apprears to me. If I get a chance I'll check out one fo mine today.

When I look in the foreground I see that the latch mechanism is barely moving. It should have lots more travel than what you've got

to unlock the lock. The first thing i would try is blasting the latch mechanism with wd40 or pb blaster. Also check that your linkage's

are not bent or are binding and are Properly seated in their bore holes.

edit: I seem to remember someone saying that they reversed their door locks. i.e. exchanging L for R and turning them over

so that the latch linkage is in the proper place. This supposedly helps compensate for a worn door lock/tumbler as i remember.

Nix that idea if yours are brand new.

I diagnostic the issue based on your feedback and I discover my tumbler is already worn out!

That's why I can't lock the door.

I'm getting new tumbler from ebay now...

tamo3, That is a very common failure of the Z car door locks.

Replacing the cylinders is probably the best way to take care of it, but here's some threads that show a different way of dealing with it:

My pleasure. That wire fix seems as good as a way as any to fix the problem short of resorting to new parts.

So you already ordered the new locks off ebay? Just toss them in a box and hold onto them in case the coat hanger fix doesn't last. Oh, and one thing to remember is that the ones coming from ebay are keyed different than what you already have, so if you do eventually switch to the new locks, you'll either have to re-key them all to match or you'll have to carry multiple keys.

Yes, once I get new tumbler, I need to re-key for ignition and rear hatch too.

I installed this tumbler and I realized that I broke plastic part that connect to the bar.

I use wire to manage the looseness and now everything is working!

Re-keying any of the locks is very easy except for the door locks. The ignition, glove box, and hatch locks are all cake.

The door locks are a little tougher due to the chrome (stainless actually) facecap trim crimped onto the outside face. I built a fixture that makes it possible for me to get that trim off with little enough bending that it can be re-used, but even with my fixture, it's not an easy job. They make facecap removal tools, but I wasn't thinking I'd be doing mine ever again.

You're getting quite good with the clothes hanger wire! :laugh:
