force of 11 has harvested a run-down, one-fifth-mile stretch

of U.S. 40 near Columbus for millions of dollars in traffic fines.

In good years, police bring in more than $400,000, more

than 90% of town revenue. Nearly all of the money goes

Around here N.E. Oklahoma ( on the line of three states ) Most of the towns make ends meet with traffic tickets. Around here they go as far as road blocks ( I hit about one every two weeks ) The police pick a spot that you cant get around and set up shop. Late at night with no lights on until you are on top of them. Then they turn on the lights and put you through the paces and ticket you on what ever they can. I am a safe driver with a good record and spend at least one day every two months in court because of trumped up tickets.

They see out of state plates and start drooling. They know if they ticket a person from out of state that the chance of them just paying rather then fighting it are grater then ticketing a person that lives there.

Now there are also towns near here that have had enough people put up big enough fights with the courts. Because of these fights there are three small towns that have had the courts take away the power of the police to write traffic tickets.

There are so many police around here its NUTS. We have about 10,000 people ( that number is going down.) The city police dept. has 10 marked cars and 25 unmarked.

There is the sheriffs dept. with 20 marked cars trucks and SUVs with another 25 unmarked. Another is the FBI who has a office here with 6 cars. Then there is the OSBI Oklahoma state bureau of investigations 5 cars. Highway patrol has 6 cars (in town).

Now you would think around 80 some odd units would do for 10,000 people. NOT HERE I have not even started with the Indian police depts.. We have 6 or 7 tribes here. Every tribe has there own police dept. with 4 – 8 cars each. Oh yah almost forgot I live one block from the collage and they have there own police force with 3 cars.

Now this list is just for my town of 10,000 people. They wonder why our town is going broke. Other then the ford dealership that sells them the cars.

Sorry just pissed about the ticket I got this morning. Now I have court in two weeks. AGAIN. This time for window tint. I would not be so pissed but the tint on the cops windows was darker then mine.

I am with Smokey here - cops are bad most of the time, but they do their job (Although i am against the revenue collecting techniques with speed camera's) and they are the ones coming over at 3am when i have arrrived home from a big night out to find my Zed surrounded by smashed glass, seats slashed and stereo taken.

You dont have to be a anti-Police protestor to see that what is happening in that small town is STUPID.

My personal experience with cops is they are ignorant, power-tripping fools with boredom feeding their hunger to wizz you off.

Sure, some police people are probably very nice, NORMAL people, but from MY experience that's my impression. Sad in a way that they have influenced me to develop a hatred for authority and beaurocracy.

I'm sure the jokes in passing were spur of the moment generic comments in passing - the sort of thing you simply cannot avoid when talking about the Police Force in general. I guess in a way you must feel the same as how Lawyers and the Irish feel!!

good call - but i reckon if the police governing bodies gave em' more doughnuts, they would be easier to deal with!

I had a horrid time with my P plates on my zed - and amazingly as soon as i turned 21 and ditched the plates, the cops left me alone! interesting.....

If you'll re-read my post and it's heading, you will notice that I said THESE COPS; I did not disparage ALL COPS. Regarding the "originality" of my statement.....that TRUISM hasn't survived all of these years for no reason......it is TRUE of the WORST members of the police forces. And most of us have encountered EXAMPLES of this kind of police.

THESE A$$HOLES (New Rome, OHIO; and NE Oklahoma ones refered to by carguyinok) deserve the jabs (and more!) and SHOULD be only allowed to have one bullet on their person, and it should be tucked into a shirt pocket! Just like Barney Fife. (there, are you happy now? ) They are NOT "Police" in the sense that most of us think of Police, they are merely TAX COLLECTORS. Why else would you need 11 members of the force for a town of 60 people, or 80+ cruisers for a town of 10,000 in OK? Think about it!

On the odd chance that any of these "tax collectors" are members of this club, I still say SCREW EM!

My strong opinions on this are not directed at you (or any other police), unless you are one of these tax collecting fools! In which case you get what you deserve! Taxation under color of police authority is UNETHICAL, and should be ILLEGAL, not ENCOURAGED!

How about we drop this subject? I'm sure we all have our stories and opinions but this isn't the place for this subject (or is it?). I would think the locals in that area would get together to solve that problem just as they have on the interstate in central Florida.
