S30 fastener cataloging

Hi all,

It's been a while since I've visited this site and I must say I have waned in my resto project. However, I have been digging around in the garage and with renewed vigor, are now slowly getting back into it.

I've been sifting through boxes of fasteners that I cleaned, buffed and had re electroplated. Issue I have is that the paper notes I made of what goes where has faded enough that I haven't a clue of what goes where.

To cut a long story short, has anyone gone thought the fasteners on a S30 and cataloged what goes where based on machine screw head number, size and length.

I'll be doing this on my next resto starting in the spring.

Every fastener will be sized and photographed and put online as well as an xls.

Some data exists on line now but it is not complete.

An online car parts manual is the best I have seen so far.

Blue, that would be awesome if you were to do that.

Has anyone found a good source to buy new yellow cad nuts and bolts that would have same thread, pitch etc for our cars? I have searched online and at local hardware stores for a long time with no success.

Oi James, The mind/memory is a terrible thing to lose, eh? Have you heated the garage? I hope to see your zed up and running when next we return to Godzone. Winter here 10" snow on the ground with more on the way. Fortunately my zed is snug and warm in a heated garage. Sigh...Spring should come sometime.

Hey Mark,

If I were to do this again, I'd pull a section apart at a time, clean then in a parts washer, wire wheel them then have then re-electroplated. Cost to do the whole car would be well under half of what any kit would be and you know that what you put back is 100% right. Might sound a little anal, but if you want an original look, I can't see any other way.

Mike, Gidday mate. No heater required yet. I ended up winning the South Island Island Paper Championship and with the Nationals being here next Xmas, I've decided to give sailing a back seat for a while. Young family is now teenaged and requires more Dad time over the weekends plus what seems endless taxi service after work each day. So time in the garage sifting through boxes of dusty bolts is now rather quite attractive. When are you coming over?

Microfiche shows what machine screw, spring, washer, diameter but not length or what is stamped on the head. Can't have it all I guess.

Topic about suspension bolts has been already discussed, you can find all info in the following link or on the following one.

On the other side, I've been recorded every bolt & size I've removed from my car. Since I've rebuilt the engine, here the list for my L28 engine. Most likely the same for L26 & L24. They are all normal pitch metric bolts. To replace eveything with brand new bolts, it cost me 20€ in Europe. It is probably more expensive to replate stock units.

I did not include specific bolts/studs such as rod bolts, cranshaft bolts, head studs, etc. you should source them at Nissan dealer or ARP (--> what I did).

Once more, I'm not in favor of replating stock bolts. They have been stretched & stressed already. once they're removed, they should go to the bin, except eventually for the ones with no stress associated with them.

Basically:

Suspension/brake bolts ==> Trash, if one fails, you can die

Motor component bolts (dizzy, water pump, etc.) ==> can be reused, if one fails, you might only end up on the side of the road.

Motor critical bolts ==> Trash

someone's def already done that. last year i sifted through and found an xls with all of the info and pics for each fastener in the front and rear suspension. i also found other docs with the location of the fasteners labeled on a fsm picture.

i also remember searching ebay or somewhere and finding fastener sets. this was about a year ago so maybe not available anymore.

when i took the front suspension off my 260z they were still zinc plated and in good shape. but i do want to replace them all at one point. for piece of mind, if anything.

That's a great idea, only thing if a car has been modded or otherwise worked on a lot, sometimes the wrong bold length or head-type is used. So you might have to check each one to see if it matches the others for the same part. Go get'em Tiger!! ;)
