Euthanasia that was were Pete was headed. I am glad i didn't have to make that

Trip to the vet this time.

Pete's problems stem from years of ear infections and Antibiotics.

He was up and getting around on his own till the last night but stopped eating the last three days. I fed him baby food and water from a syringe that last day. Here is a video explaining vestibular Pete showed sings of this for years.

My pug before Pete was Bullit i had to put him down at 14 years.

For the last four years he was on insulin and went blind at 13.

He could get around the house and yard with no problem.

But diabetic seizures forced me to put him down.

I still miss that dog.

If you care for a medium to large breed dog well enough to get a healthy teenager for any period of time, you have done well. I've mostly had Dobies and Rott's, the average life expectancy is around 8 years for these breeds. My last Dobie, Kato, made it 14 years before I had to put him down, I sobed like a bitch and held him on my lap for an hour after he passed, I wanna cry just thinking about it. Ruger will be 8 this summer and he's healthy as a horse.

I think the biggest key to a raising a healthy old dog is doing your homework when getting the pup. Look hard at the parents (and the parents litter mates if you can) if you can't meet with mom and dad, don't take the pup. Look at previous litters too if you can, most owners will be glad to have you visit. Stay away from pet stores and kennels, besides supporting puppy mills, those dogs are not as healthy as a private breeders stock. If you don't want to do all the leg work, adopt.

Not trying to jump the thread, just a hard core animal lover, currently have 1 dog, 1 cat, 2 birds and a horse. Food donations are appriciated.

I try to look at my pets age in human years and not calendar years - dogs and cats age approx. 1 human to 8 dog years. The last pet we put down was out cat - she was 16 years old and blind. The one before that was our dog (she was 14 and had eye cancer - we had to have that removed also but the cancer came back. We asked out vet how do you know when to put down a pet and she said when the pet stopped doing it's 3 favorite things it was time...............still hurts like a SOB but nobody wants a loved family member in pain or not living the life that is deserved. Of course we have a cat and a dog - we are animals lovers as well but I keep on telling myself this is our last pet.............I know I am kidding myself too...........

The sadist thing i have ever seen my neighbor moved and left the dog.

That dog hung out at the house for weeks roaming free then coming back and sitting on porch of empty house.

We finely got it in a kennel. Detroit is filled with unwanted dogs.
