Hello everyone,

My mother has a 1972 240Z which she is the original owner. She is looking to sell it, but the price seems to vary so much we are not sure what to ask. Is this something that this forum can help me with? I can describe the car more with pictures, but want to make sure that this is the proper venue.

Hi Elaine,

It is all about the condition of the car and it's market location. Rust, repaints, prior accidents, documentation (from warranty card through repairs) etc make a huge difference. Location is a big deal. There are a lot of Z's out west in good conditon, not so many in the east as rust gets to them. It boils down to supply and demand. By all means, post a few pictures and members here will chime in with their opinions. Look at other venues, craigslist, ebay, autotrader, etc. Look at the ones that have sold on ebay, not the ones listed. Anyone can ask a price, it is what has sold that tells you what you want to know. See how they compare with what you have. And be paitient if you can. Top dollar is a good thing, but don't let a good offer prevent you from selling and getting on with life.

Sure take photos and post here. Rust is the big problem with these cars. If you can take clear photos of the common rust areas and they appear good the the value will be more.

Be sure to get some pics of the battery area / engine bay / interior / rear hatch and all four corners / catch one with the rear hatch open right above the tail lights on the lip where the hatch sits when closed / some of these areas are prone for rust as mentioned above and can effect your sell price. One more pic will be needed - remove your floor board carpets and get down to the metal floor pan - that is a needed pic as well on both sides. Does the dash have any cracks - that would be a good pic also...........keep us posted.

Elaine, The wall street journal published an article on the top collectable cars in 2004. One car was the 71 to 73 240z. I found this article on the internet z car club .

Thanks everyone for your feedback!!! I need to get more detailed pictures like some of areas that you have described. I will do that this weekend. In the meantime I do have the following photos and details. I do not think that it has any rust- always garaged in Southern Cali. The car was in a minor front bumper/hood accident-at the time the car was repainted (same white color). Everything on the inside is original and in perfect running order- no cracks in dash or in leather. On the door it says 3/72. She has all of the original owners manuals etc and records of repairs. Will send more pictures soon!

Your mother's car looks like it is in very good shape! If you could provide more pictures, that would help us give you a better idea of the car's approximate value.

Looks like a $15k to $20k car. More pics will determine.

The automatic transmission is usually not desired but the state of the car in the photos is very desired.

The fact your mom is the original owner makes it special as well.

Good Luck selling it! She will find it to be a profitable investment.

It is a good looking car. 15-20 may be a little optimistic, might get your hopes up, but who knows I guess. How many miles? I will admit I am a little bit jealous....... : )

Looks like it's in fantastic shape and I love the white/red as well! If there truly is no rust, I would say $10-15k is a safe bet. Anything over is icing on the cake. Ebay may be a good idea in this case.

I agree with Leon. Ebay would give it the most exposure. If it had a 4spd in it instead of the automatic it would be very desirable. Don't get me wrong, its still desirable with the auto. trans., just not as much with a 4spd. As it is your 240z should bring $10K - $15K all day long. Just a great looking car!
