Posted March 29, 201312 yr comment_419148 Hey gangI had my tires rotated this afternoon at my local mechanic. While they had the car in the air they noticed that the rear output seal, speedo seal and the shifter seal were all leaking trans fluid. Does anyone happen to know where one could procure these seals?ThanksJan Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/46140-leaky-transmission/ Share on other sites
March 29, 201312 yr comment_419151 The output seal should be easily available just about anywhere that sells parts, the speedometer is sealed with a simple o-ring in the knurled nut that holds the cable to the transmission, and as far as around the shifter, that's not actually a seal, just a dust boot, there is a small round one that separates the inside of the transmission from the outside world, and a big rectangular one that separates the outside world from the inside of the cabin of the car, they're available from places like MSA.Z Car Parts.com -- Motorsport Auto -- HomeWelcome To Motorsport & The Z Store! Nissan-Datsun 240Z-260Z-280Z-280ZX-300ZX(Z31/Z32)-350Z-370Z Parts! Also, whereas new seals are great, I'd also suggest cleaning up your transmission real good and seeing where there actually real leaks, and where it's just greasy for being under a car for 40 years.Note, early 240Zs have slightly different transmissions, so keep that in mind. March 29, 201312 yr comment_419152 There are actually two seals that may leak where the speedometer cable goes into the transmission - the obvious O-ring and a smaller inner seal. March 30, 201312 yr comment_419156 ^^Right^^Also, the shifter has 2 seals as well (in addition to the dust boot). There is an o-ring around the striking rod guide and a seal around the striking rod (in the tail housing). While you are in there, check the vent. If it gets blocked it will cause leaks due to pressure build-up in the case. March 30, 201312 yr comment_419180 Hi Jan, Looked up the parts I used for my transmission. I have a later version of the FS5W71B (I think it came out of a 280ZX) but the o-rings and seals should be the same. You can also try the Nissan dealer. All the parts are available at my Nissan dealer, next day pick-up. Speedo pinion seal 32709-14600 Speedo pinion o-ring 32710-14600 I also replaced the bushes in the shift lever. Took out that "stick in the mud" feel when changing gears. Control lever cup 32861-N4200 Control lever bushing (2x) 32855-H1010 Rear oil seal 32136-U0100 I also had a reverse latch with an o-ring. Nissan could not supply the o-ring, just a complete unit, so I found one at a local parts store. If the oil is leaking from the Striking rod guide, then you will need to dismantle the rear of the transmission. Striking rod guide seal 32858-U6700 (Nissan quoted me 32858-U6702) Striking rod guide o-ring 32710-14600 (same as speedo pinion o-ring) When I rebuilt my transmission it had a small leak. After a couple of months it was moist around a pin just in front of the shifter. I sealed it with sealant. See photo. Goodluck with it. I'm going to take things apart next weekend and see where things are leaking from. My shifter is quite firm - makes a distinct "CLICK" - when I put it in gear, which I really like, so I'm going to leave that be. I will do the seals and take lots of pictures and post here when done. Thank againJan Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/46140-leaky-transmission/#findComment-419273 Share on other sites
