Hatch Hinge Seals Painted from Factory?

Can anyone tell me if the hatch hinge seals were painted body color from the factory? It seems a little odd to paint over rubber but I know the hinges and body bolts were installed prior to paint and then the actual hatch and hatch screws were assembled afterwards. Were the seals installed prior to paint or were the hinges removed from the body after paint to install these seals?

Attached is a picture showing the area I am referring to. Right now the car is in primer.

All three of my '71's obviously had the hinge sock/seal inserted and the hinge bolted in prior to painting the body. I can't find any pictures that show that right now, but it's true. The part of the rubber flange that protruded from under the hinge plate was painted, as was the hinge and the two big screw heads holding the hinges to the body. The hatches, on the other hand, were painted separately, as the screw heads for hatch attachment were unpainted.

Hi Matt,

I am almost certain that the hatch hinges along with the hinge shims and hinge seals were mounted on the car, without the hatch, and painted at the factory. Two things I

do know for certain are, the hex head phillips machine screws that securing the hinges to the body ARE PAINTED. The two flat head phillips machine screws that secure the

hatch to the hinges were NOT PAINTED. This can be seen in the picture attached in siteunseen's post. I had done a lot of research when restoring my car to verify the finish

of these machine screws.

Some of my reasoning to come to this conclusion is, had the hinges been painted separately, or mounted without the seals during the factory painting process, the process of putting those hinges on the car, or mounted unpainted seals after painting the hinges, would have probably marred the hex head machine screws in the process of installation. Knowing that these particular machine screws were indeed painted, they would have needed to be repainted or retouched ( not a very efficient process to me).

Thank you very much for all your observations. I agree that what both of you said. Dan you bring up some very good points. One thing that had me wondering though is it is possible that the bolts were removed after paint without them getting marred up. For example some body shops will hang the fenders with the upper fender bolts loose during the paint job so they can be removed without tearing up the finish.

I guess that doesn't answer the question though on how they can be finally torqued down without the bolts getting marred. I would imagine the hatch hinge bolts need to be pretty tight.

I read somewhere, Coutesey Nissan I think, those were available part #'s to 1975. My June of '72 does not have them either, probably from previous owners 10ft paint job.
