Posted May 2, 201311 yr comment_422305 Your mission, should you accept: You are standing in front of a JY right before it opens with tools including an electric or gas angle grinder with a cut off wheel. You are aware that there are several early Z's in the JY, 240s, 260s and 280s. What parts would you grab first (windshield?) because you need them now, they are no longer available or you might need them later either for trading or to give away? Do you grab a head instead of the whole engine because the block isn't subject to failure very often and the head is realtively easy to cart off? I had a similar decision process happen to me. This post will self destruct in 30 seconds. Remember that show mission impossible? May 2, 201311 yr comment_422307 I grab good bumpers whenever I find them. The yard calls them 'face bars' and they sell for roughly $15. I can usually sell them for $100 + shipping. These days, my car is so close to where I want it, I find myself grabbing factory fasteners. I'd love to find a 5 speed ZX transmission. May 2, 201311 yr comment_422313 If we are talking a quick (60 min time limit) one person job then Taillights, Valve Covers, Radio, Carbs, check glovebox and tool box for anything of interest, bumpers, hubcaps, spare tire, Hatch with glass, corner windows (easy to remove) center console, dash (if in good shape but prob is not especially if it's in Illinois) headlight scoops, Hood (if you can remove and transport it yourself), hose clamps and Engine wire clips, Shift knob, steering wheel, and tool doors. And if there tie hooks. These are my quick grab get out items I would hit up. May 2, 201311 yr comment_422323 Headlight scoops, early carbs, radio, rear speaker holder, check the tool bins, and don't forget to look for loose change under the seats.Dennis Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/46442-grabbing-jy-parts-which-ones-to-grab-first/#findComment-422323 Share on other sites
May 2, 201311 yr comment_422325 While grabbing some parts off of a 12K mile total, one time, I saw a big pile of OEM bolts, nuts and clips that someone left lying on the drivers side floor. I grabbed the whole pile. That has served me well for a number of years.Marty Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/46442-grabbing-jy-parts-which-ones-to-grab-first/#findComment-422325 Share on other sites
May 3, 201311 yr Author comment_422403 conedodger, Taz0162, psdenno, Marty Rogan, Thanks for the ideas I will take them to the cars next time I see one. I thought I was resourceful at scrounging parts, some of your ideas I hadn't thought of. There is a 79 280ZX I believe it is in a JY here and I have read they sometimes have the hardened valve seats though I recognize a problem with the head might be the reason the car is in the JY now. May 10, 201311 yr comment_423039 I dont think this will ever be my mission here in the Netherlands:mad:. Finding a JY that has any part of a Z here is like winning the lottery. May 11, 201311 yr Author comment_423091 Where are my tow chains? Grab some rollers and ALL ABOARD THE Z TRAIN OUTTA THEREHa ha I hadn't thought of tow chains. The Z in the JY I saw was not a roller or at least the tires were missing. Maybe I needed drag chains. I grabbed the stuff I needed first. I wondered if the dismantler would have sold me the whole thing? I am sure the neighbors would have been delighted with a car missing tires sitting in the street. There is probably some killjoy law against that.Mike Link to comment https://www.classiczcars.com/forums/topic/46442-grabbing-jy-parts-which-ones-to-grab-first/#findComment-423091 Share on other sites
