Two black & one green wire/ solenoid on 72 240Z Auto.

Hello,

I can't relocate a thread I read a few weeks ago which identified a plug with 2 black and 1 green wire behind the dash.

I'm putting a new Radio in and the wires I'm looking at are under where the Radio sits with a 3 pin solenoid fixed to the left side bracket. The plug wasn't fitted onto the solenoid but it will fit. I've downloaded the colour wiring diagram but don't see it shown.

Can anyone identify this or remember the thread which discussed it. Don't want to plug it in, switch on and see what happens.

Look at the 72 FSM instead. On EE-2 it shows the connectors for non-North American cars. The only green wires I could identify in the FSM for non-North American cars were power for the fuel pump, power for the turn signals, and power for an electric fan in the engine bay.

I guess this begs the question. Do you have a right-hand drive Z? If so, hopefully someone like Alan, who is more familiar with non-North American cars than I am, will speak up.

Just remembered, does anyone recall the thread on refurbishing the flasher combo switch, it had step by step photographs.

There was also someone who could refurbish these switches.

Any info on these would be appreciated, even if someone just remembered the user names.

My car is a california import with the Air pollution control system. I also have a thermal relay being an Auto but that has a fourth 'red' wire.

I'm sure someone will remember given time.

I see the guy who did these pretty often. LOL

Refurbishing the switch isn't rocket surgery. You just tend to break off the tabs off the switch cover.

The FSM does not have a connector listed like you describe, though it could have been an omission. Can you post some pictures?

Also, you may want to edit your signature to indicate you have a North American model. That will help in identifying some of the correct nuances of your car.

They weren't the ones however they are very good articles I hadn't read before.

I followed the 'Tech tips' link from one of those articles and it lead me to the one I was looking for by the same author,

Okay, I believe that is the kickdown solenoid for the automatic transmission. Does your car still have the automatic?

Yes it does still have auto but I've not been able to drive the car since importing it because I need to pass a DMV inspection.

If it is for the kickdown, I'm suspicious as to why it's been unplugged. The blower was also disconnected but seems to work now that I've reconnected the earth.

I'll only find out once I get it on the road however those links you sent me had an article on relays so I'll have a read and see if there's a way to do some basic tests.

I could be wrong about the relay.

You may need to download the 73 FSM to get info on the automatic transmission. The 72 manual doesn't have it, not even the hardcopy I have. The transmissions must have been covered in a separate manual for that year. Anyway, the AT section describes the operation. There should be a switch on the throttle pedal that closes a switch. That switch completes the circuit that should activate the kickdown solenoid on the transmission. It doesn't talk about a relay.

If you know how to use a multimeter, I suggest looking for the switch on the throttle pedal. It should have green wires. See if one has continuity with the green wire going to the relay. Also check continuity to ground on both of the black wires. I suspect one of them does not have continuity. Also, can you remove the relay from the car and post the part number?

I'll have a look at the 73 FSM.

Yes, there is a switch on the accelerator.

It's dark here now, after 10pm, and I don't have good lighting where I keep the car so I'll do those checks tomorrow and have a look at the relay.

That plug with a green and black wire is for an electric pump. It is an open loop circuit and when a car gets an electric pump, additional wires with a plug are plugged into THAT plug to complete the circuit.
